The use of storage devices in electric transport complexes allows one substantially enhance the effi ciency of energy transformation and decrease the non uniformity of energy consumption, which is mainly determined by the motion modes of a vehicle. The nonuniformity of electrical loads causes additional energy losses within the units of a traction power cir cuit and leads to the accelerated aging of its individual units [1].The arrangement of the storage device on a rolling stock allows one to completely utilize the energy out put in the braking mode, without transferring it into the traction power circuit. One can decrease the non uniformity of current loads depending on the operat ing modes of the energy storage (floating mode, i.e., primary power supply of a propulsion engine from the storage or a mode of limiting the maximum current of a train) that gives one the possibility to increase the length of the section of a contact system by 50-70% in the terms of the maximum current [2]. The greatest effect is achieved in the case of using the energy stor age to limit the maximum train current in the traction mode. The mathematical models that allow one to inves tigate the effect of operating drive modes on the form of the train current were developed in order to the check control algorithms for traction drives. A basic drive model involves the parallel operation of two energy sources, i.e., traction power circuit (source of unbounded power) and charged energy storage (source of bounded power). The propulsion engine model with drag torque proportional to the main spe cific trolleybus resistance is used as the load (Fig. 1).The generalized structure of the drive model is pre sented in Fig. 2 and involves the following main units: traction power circuit (TC); energy storage (ES); receiving passive LC filter (RF); voltage regulator (VR) on a traction electric motor (TEM); and a regulator (RES) that connects the ES, which is regulated by the current supplied from the traction power circuit (I c ).The VR is a reducing DC/DC converter with the pos sibility of control by any control law, i.e., pulse duration control, pulse frequency control, or relay logic. In the case of pulse duration control, the converter has motor current feedback because the ES voltage is higher than the TC voltage. The regulator in the ES circuit is a bidi Abstract-The findings of investigations of mathematical and physical models for an energy efficient trac tion drive with the energy storage based on an electric double layer capacitor are presented. ∫ ∫ U R in 1 L M Mc R w μ r μ r R w 1 J M r.s.16 0.004 V CF(i) ω e i Fig. 1.
