This article examines aspects of the propagation of heat flows in an arc furnace operated with different types of graphite electrodes: standard (solid) electrodes and electrodes with an axial opening. There are certain distinctive features to the formation of the electric arc at the end of the electrode when it contains such an opening. A model is constructed to calculate the heat flows in the system comprised of the arc, the bath, and the furnace's working space. The data obtained from modeling show that charging pellets into the furnace through electrodes with axial openings makes it possible to intensify the steelmaking operation, increase the efficiency of the arcs, reduce oxidation-related losses of metal under the electrodes, and improve the energy-engineering indices of the production process. The remelting of metallized iron-ore pellets (MIPs) in ultrahigh-power electric-arc steelmaking furnaces (EAFs) is a promising trend in modern electric steelmaking [1, 2]. However, a charge that includes a large quantity of metallized pellets is quite energy-intensive because it contains iron oxides and country rock, which increases the amount of energy needed to perform the steelmaking operation. Also, the heat flow from the arc to the surface of the bath cannot be fully assimilated by the mass of metal in the charge. This results in evaporation of the melt and its entrainment with the flue gases [3].Despite the achievements realized thus far in the existing technology for the EAF refining of metallized iron-ore pellets, there are still ways that the process can be further improved so as to make the steelmaking operation more efficient [4]. For example, the following are among the most important developments in improving MIP refining in electric furnaces [5, 6]: intensification of pellet-refining processes; optimization of the electrical regime during the refining operation; the use of new types of electrodes; and selection of an efficient method for supplying the furnace bath with pellets [7,8].The problems of reducing electric-power usage in MIP refining [1] and decreasing the amount of time that the EAF is under current can be solved by directing the charge of metallized raw material into the high-temperature regions of the furnace where the effect of the electric arcs is greatest [2,3]. Taking this approach is even more expedient in modern ultrahighpower EAFs, since substantial oxidation losses of metal in the form of iron-bearing dust occur in zones of the surface of the metal bath that are most directly affected by the arcs [8].In light of the foregoing, it is necessary to explore the use of different methods [5,10,11] to solve the problem of the change in the thermal state [9] of the molten bath (metal and slag) during the continuous charging of metallized iron-ore pellets. Results obtained from modeling done as part of an analysis of the thermal state of the bath [2, 5] made it possible to approximately examine the way in which the temperature of the melt is affected by the use of pellet-charging methods that
