The Passion is a novel written by a modern British feminist writer of the 20th century, Jeanette Winterson in 1987. She concerns with lesbian themes, gender, and sexuality in her works. This study aims to show the contribution of representation theory promoted by Stuart Hall in literary studies. The study utilized the concept of feminism proposed by Beauvoir as the foundation for data analysis to strengthen the argument. Data analysis shows that this novel expresses the spirit of feminism, namely 1) the resistance to the objectification of women, 2) the rejection of women's subordination, and 3) the support of cultural feminism. The analysis of the text narrative and the contextual background of the novel and the writer, the study showcased the ideological position of the writer
The Metamorphosis is a novella written by Franz Kafka. This novel tells about a young man named Gregor Samsa who has experienced alienation. This research aims to understand the effects of alienation experienced by Gregor Samsa as a major character in The Metamorphosis. Erich Fromm's theory about three mechanisms of escape is used to analyse the effort of Gregor Samsa in solving his psychological problem of alienation. Modern man usually uses three mechanisms of escape by Erich Fromm to reduce the feeling of fear and isolation of burdened freedom when they want to be free. This research uses qualitative research in which the data are in the form of words and sentences in this novella. This study applies the documentary method as the technique of data collection. The data can be taken from various sources, such as documents, books, and journals. This research shows that Gregor Samsa’s alienation has influenced his entire life, family, and society.
Matched belongs to the dystopian novel, which is popular in the last twenty years. This genre usually satirizes the established state, which controls every part of people’s lives. Matched talks about how the government control people’s lives led to the social class conflict. The social class conflict is essential to be discussed because it shows the unequal structure in the established society. The objective of this research is to examine Ally Condie’s Matched by using Stuart Hall’s theory of representation is to find out the class conflict and exposes the critical position of the author. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The analysis technique is to look at the narrative of the figures, Cassia Reyes and Ky Markham, as the reflection of citizen struggle in a totalitarian government called Society. The findings show that Cassia and Ky have to strive in Society because Society perpetuates its power by manipulating politics and exploiting the economy. This research is encouraging the other researchers to examine Matched from different angles, perspectives and theories to complement the findings of this current study.
