Universidade de Caxias do Sul (UCS) -Programa de Pós ABSTRACTThe social capital is present in the formation of work teams that seek to succeed in their actions through cooperation, being a key component in their performance. The objective of this study is to identify and analyze the key elements of social capital that has been developed in teams, according to the degree of formalization of work processes. In order to reach this purpose, a qualitative-exploratory case study was designed. Two companies were chosen: one in which the processes of teamwork are formalized and structured and another, whose performance teams happens informally. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data and the content analysis framework, to analyze the results. The main results show that, from the standpoint of strengthening social capital in work teams, the two companies had similar results, i.e., the formal structuring of work teams was not a prerequisite for the development of social capital.
