A forte industrialização da região norte fluminense e o avanço das atividades imobiliárias faz com que o ambiente das restingas seja muito impactado. Por outro lado, a preocupação com a preservação da natureza vem crescendo de forma significante. Neste contexto, destaca-se a importância do paisagismo funcional, no qual os conceitos como restauração de áreas degradadas e utilização de plantas nativas são contemplados. Seguindo este conceito, foi proposto para a futura sede do Parque Estadual da Lagoa do Açu (PELAG) um projeto paisagístico que ajude a minimizar impactos ambientais, sugerindo um ensaio de recuperação de áreas degradadas. Neste projeto foi aplicada a técnica de nucleação que compõe microhabitats e pode ser utilizada para recuperação de ecossistemas nativos. Como metodologia básica usou-se um desenho esquemático de anéis hexagonais, cada um com 31 indivíduos, utilizando-se no centro de cada anel uma espécie vegetal pioneira de restinga, circundada por espécies secundárias. Foram sugeridas a utilização 10 espécies vegetais pioneiras e 10 espécies secundárias. Foi projetado o plantio das mudas com espaçamento de 1,5 metros entre si, ocupando uma área total de 47,39 m². A proposição de anéis e arranjos integrativos utilizando-se exclusivamente espécies vegetais das diferentes fitofisionomias de restinga, bem como representantes dos quatro tipos de mangues da eco-região de São Tomé, contribuem não apenas para a recuperação ambiental, como também estabelece forte iniciativa de paisagismo funcional, além de eliminar o risco da contaminação biológica, caso estas escapem das áreas de cultivo. Para a integração dos quatro tipos de anéis também foi proposta a abertura da “Trilha da Praia” que além de servir para a educação ambiental possibilita a interação entre esta proposta de paisagismo e um remanescente de restinga situado ao lado da área deste projeto, esperando-se assim uma influência direta sobre a área trabalhada.
