OBJETIVO: Estimar a prevalência de sobrepeso e os fatores associados em crianças de creches públicas e privadas de Balneário Camboriú (SC). MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal. No primeiro estágio, foram sorteadas 20 creches e depois as crianças foram sorteadas (n=564). A coleta de dados incluiu questionário com variáveis infantis e do responsável e medidas antropométricas. As razões de chances (Odds Ratio - OR) brutas e ajustadas e respectivos intervalos de confiança de 95% (IC 95%) foram calculados por meio da regressão logística não-condicional. RESULTADOS: A taxa de resposta foi de 83,7% (n=491). A maioria das crianças era de creches públicas (75,7%), com idade superior a dois anos e estava homogeneamente distribuída quanto ao sexo. A eutrofia foi o estado nutricional predominante (87,8%), seguida pelo sobrepeso (9,5%); só 2,6% dos avaliados apresentaram risco de desnutrição ou desnutrição. Após análise ajustada, crianças com idade inferior a dois anos (OR 2,8; IC95% 1,1-7,7), peso ao nascer > 4kg (OR 6,3; IC95% 1,2-34,6) ou cujo consumo alimentar foi considerado aumentado pelos responsáveis (OR 21,1; IC95% 5,9-75,4) apresentaram maior chance de sobrepeso. Variáveis da mãe e/ou responsável, como sobrepeso, estado civil, idade e escolaridade, não se associaram ao sobrepeso nas crianças avaliadas. CONCLUSÕES: A prevalência de excesso de peso encontrada foi aproximadamente quatro vezes maior do que a de desnutrição e se associou a variáveis infantis.
