The uptake of nitrate, sulphate, phosphate, and potassium from a nutrient solution by young alder trees (Alnus glutinosa) was reduced during hypoxia. Such a decrease of ion uptake was not observed when the internal oxygen supply of the tree roots was improved by pressurized gas transport. These results demonstrate the beneficial effect of this gas transport phenomenon on the nutrition of trees growing on wet sites characterized by anaerobic soil.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
