The relative efficacy of NaF silica toothpastes containing 1000 ppm fluoride and 1500 ppm fluoride in the control of dental caries is not clear-cut. Also, it has not been established that incorporation of trimetaphosphate (TMP) improves the anticaries activity of NaF toothpastes. A three-year clinical trial was conducted to test the hypotheses that: (i) the anticaries activity of NaF toothpastes containing 1500 ppm F was greater than that of NaF toothpastes containing 1000 ppm F, and (ii) inclusion of TMP improved the efficacy of NaF silica pastes. Subsidiary aims included determination of whether frequency of toothbrushing and method of rinsing after brushing were correlated with caries increments. The study involved 4196 children aged 11 to 12 years at outset. These participants had been selected from a pool of 7374 potential subjects on the basis of caries experience and dental eruption pattern. They were stratified by sex, examiner, and presence of calculus and caries, and were allocated at random to one of the four toothpastes under study. Using mirror and probe and also FOTI, we carried out clinical examinations at baseline and annually thereafter for 3 yrs. Bitewing radiographs of a subset of children were taken at baseline and at the end of the study. The outcome measure for the study, DMFS increment, was defined as the increase in caries over 3 yrs, taking into account changes occurring on individual tooth surfaces. Data for 3467 subjects were available for analyses at both baseline and year 3 examinations. Radiographs were taken for 1942 subjects at both baseline and year 3 examinations. The mean three-year clinical-only DMFS increment for the subjects using 1500-ppm-NaF pastes was 3.93, which was 6% lower than the corresponding mean of 4.19 for the 1000-ppm-NaF pastes. There was no significant difference between the mean DMFS increment for those using paste with or without TMP. Subjects who claimed to brush more frequently or who claimed not to use a tumbler to rinse after toothbrushing had lower three-year DFMS increments.
Argues that the philosophical debate in marketing, led by Shelby Hunt and Paul Anderson, is no longer providing new insights and is symptomatic of the anthropocentrism of the social sciences. This anthropocentrism has had consequent implications for meta‐theoretical frameworks that describe the field and has limited the breadth of philosophical discussion in marketing. Also argues that this discussion should now move beyond the subject‐object debate and identifies writers who have variously tried to transcend the paradigm. Argues that the debate should move from epistemological to ontological and metaphysical issues and that marketing′s philosophical discussion should also be broadened to include debate on aesthetics, theology and technology.
Projects, as an organizing principle, can provide exciting contexts for innovative work. Thus far, project management discourse has tended to privilege the vital need to deliver projects 'on time, on budget, and to specification'. In common with the call for papers for this workshop we suggest that perhaps the "instrumental rationality" underpinning this language of characterising project activity may create more problems than it solves. In this paper we suggest that such questions (and language) frame project contexts in a partial way. We argue that such concerns stem from a particular worldview or ontology, which we identify as a 'being' ontology. Here we contrast being and becoming project ontologies, to explore the questions, methods and interventions that each foregrounds. In an attempt to move this dialogue further than simply another contrast of modern and postmodernist accounts of project organising, we go on to consider some possible ethical concomitants of valuing being and becoming ontologies in project contexts.

(2004) Ocularcentrism and its Others: A Framework for Metatheoretical Analysis AbstractThere is a contemporary skepticism towards vision based metaphors in management and organization studies that reflects a more general pattern across the social sciences. In short, there has been a shift away from ocularcentrism. This shift provides a useful basis for meta-theoretical analysis of the philosophical discourse that informs organizational analysis. The paper begins by briefly discussing the vision-generated, vision-centred interpretation of knowledge, truth and reality that has characterised the Western philosophical tradition. Taking late 18 th century rationalism as the high-point of ocularcentrism, the paper then presents a meta-theoretical framework based on three trajectories that the critiques of ocularcentrism have subsequently taken. The first exposes the limits of the metaphor by, paradoxically, taking it to its limits. The second trajectory seeks to displace the primordial position of the ocular metaphor and replace it with an alternative lexicon based on other human senses. Finally, the third trajectory describes how the Enlightenment ocular characterisation of the visual and mental worlds has effectively been inverted in the postmodern moment.
Alasdair MacIntyre’s distinction between institutions and practices helps illuminate how powerful institutional forces frame and constrain the practice of organizational research as well as the output and positioning of scholarly journals like Organization. Yet his conceptual frame is limited, not least because it is unclear whether the activity of managing is, or is not, a practice. This article builds on MacIntyre’s ideas by incorporating Aristotle’s concepts of poíēsis, praxis, téchnē and phrónēsis. Rather than ask, following MacIntyre, whether management is a practice, this wider network of concepts provides a richer frame for understanding the nature of managing and the appropriate role for academia. The article outlines a phronetic paradigm for organizational inquiry, and concludes by briefly examining the implications of such a paradigm for research and learning
