BackgroundWomen with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy experience difficulty in accessing adequate cancer care in China. Mobile apps have the potential to provide easily accessible support for these women. However, there remains a paucity of randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness of app-based programs targeting specifically women with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Moreover, women’s perceptions and experiences related to using and interacting within the app-based program have rarely been reported. Therefore, an app-based Breast Cancer e-Support program was developed and evaluated using a randomized controlled trial. Based on the incorporation of Bandura’s self-efficacy and social exchange theory, Breast Cancer e-Support program lasted for 12 weeks covering 4 cycles of chemotherapy and had 4 components: (1) a Learning forum, (2) a Discussion forum, (3) an Ask-the-Expert forum, and (4) a Personal Stories forum.ObjectiveAs a part of the randomized controlled trial, the aim of this study was to explore the participants’ perception of Breast Cancer e-Support program, its strengths and weaknesses, and suggestions to improve the program.MethodsA descriptive qualitative study was employed. Thirteen women with breast cancer from 2 university-affiliated hospitals in China, who were randomly allocated to the Breast Cancer e-Support program in the randomized controlled trial, were interviewed from November 2016 to February 2017. Purposive sampling was used based on women’s scores of self-efficacy after the completion of the intervention. Inductive content analysis was used to analyze the transcripts, allowing the categories and subcategories to flow from the data.ResultsThe qualitative interviews revealed that participants perceived the Breast Cancer e-Support program to be helpful in enhancing knowledge, improving confidence level, and promoting emotional well-being. Women also identified access to tailored advice from experts and convenience as the benefits of this program. Physical or psychological health status, stigma related with breast cancer, and app instability were mentioned as the challenges to engagement. Suggestions for improvement included adding message reminders to prompt instant communication and search engine to locate information quickly, supplementing more interesting and practical knowledge, updating the information more often, and quickening the responses to women’s questions. The participants recommended the Breast Cancer e-Support program to be incorporated as routine care to support women during chemotherapy.ConclusionsThis study demonstrates the potential of the Breast Cancer e-Support program to support women during chemotherapy. Future app-based programs should apply a family-centered approach and provide more support on stigma associated with the disease to encourage engagement with the app. Suggestions of improvement regarding the design, content, and operation of the app-based intervention should be addressed in future studies. It is promising to incorporate the ...
e This study evaluated the synergistic effects of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, fluoxetine, in combination with azoles against Candida albicans both in vitro and in vivo and explored the underlying mechanism. MICs, sessile MICs, and time-kill curves were determined for resistant C. albicans. Galleria mellonella was used as a nonvertebrate model for determining the efficacy of the drug combinations against C. albicans in vivo. For the mechanism study, gene expression levels of the SAP gene family were determined by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR, and extracellular phospholipase activities were detected in vitro by the egg yolk agar method. The combinations resulted in synergistic activity against C. albicans strains, but the same effect was not found for the non-albicans Candida strains. For the biofilms formed over 4, 8, and 12 h, synergism was seen for the combination of fluconazole and fluoxetine. In addition, the time-kill curves confirmed the synergism dynamically. The results of the G. mellonella studies agreed with the in vitro analysis. In the mechanism study, we observed that fluconazole plus fluoxetine caused downregulation of the gene expression levels of SAP1 to SAP4 and weakened the extracellular phospholipase activities of resistant C. albicans. The combinations of azoles and fluoxetine showed synergistic effects against resistant C. albicans may diminish the virulence properties of C. albicans.
Background Suboptimal health status (SHS) is an intermediate health status between health and illness, a syndrome characterised by the perception of health complaints, general weakness and low energy. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of SHS and the correlation between SHS and psychological symptoms among Chinese college students and to identify the SHS-related risk factors from the perspective of predictive, preventive and personalised medicine (PPPM). Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 4119 college students who were enrolled from Taishan Medical University and Baoji Vocational and Technical College in the eastern and western areas of China. SHS levels of the participants were measured by an established self-reporting Suboptimal Health Status Questionnaire-25 (SHSQ-25). Psychosomatic conditions were estimated by the self-rating Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) scale. Spearman correlation analysis was applied to analyse the relationship between SHSQ-25 scores and SCL-90 estimates. Logistic regression analysis was applied for multivariate analysis. Results The prevalence of SHS was 21.0% (864/4119), with 23.3% (701/3005) for female students and 14.6% (163/1114) for male students. The prevalence of general positive psychological symptom was 14.2% (586/4119), with 15.6% (470/3005) for female students and 10.4% (116/1114) for male students. A strong correlation was identified between SHS score and SCL-90 estimates, with the correlation coefficient (r) of 0.719. Logistic regression showed that variables significantly associated with SHS were somatisation (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 3.185, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.048-4.953), obsessive-compulsive Haifeng Hou, Xia Feng, Yuejin Li and Zixiu Meng contributed equally to this work.
A new, to the best of our knowledge, method for the measurement of the absolute distance of a remote target based on the laser diode self-mixing interferometry is presented. A double-modulation technique is introduced to improve the measurement resolution. Wavelength modulation of the laser beam is obtained by modulating the injection current of the laser diode. Phase modulation of the laser beam is obtained by an electro-optic crystal in the external cavity. Absolute distance of the external target is determined by the Fourier analysis method. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations are given. Experimental results show that a resolution of +/-0.3 mm can be achieved for absolute distance ranging from 277 to 477 mm.
