The paper presents a review of studies about the visible-light-promoted photodegradation of the contaminants and energy conversion with sensitized photocatalysts. Herein we studied mechanism, physical properties, and synergism effect of the sensitized photocatalysts as well as the method for enhancing the photosensitized effect. According to the reported studies in the literature, inorganic sensitizers, organic dyes, and coordination metal complexes were very effective sensitizers that were studied mostly, of which organic dyes photosensitization is the most widely studied modified method. Photosensitization is an important way to extend the excitation wavelength to the visible range, and therefore sensitized photocatalysts play an important role in the development of visible light-responsive photocatalysts for future industrialized applications. This paper mainly describes the types, modification, photocatalytic performance, application, and the developments of photosensitization for environmental application.
Novel photocatalysts M 2 YbSbO 7 (M = In, Gd, Y) were synthesized by solid state reaction method for the first time. A comparative study on the structural and photocatalytic properties of M2YbSbO7 M 2 YbSbO 7 (M = In, Gd, Y) was reported. The results showed that In 2 YbSbO 7 , Gd 2 YbSbO 7 , and Y 2 YbSbO 7 crystallized with the pyrochlore-type structure, cubic crystal system and space group Fd3m. For the photocatalytic water splitting reaction, H 2 or O 2 evolution was observed from pure water with In 2 YbSbO 7 , Gd 2 YbSbO 7 , or Y 2 YbSbO 7 as the photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. (wavelength > 420 nm). Moreover, under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), H 2 and O 2 were also evolved by using In 2 YbSbO 7 , Gd 2 YbSbO 7 , or Y 2 YbSbO 7 as catalyst from CH 3 OH/H 2 O and AgNO 3 /H 2 O solutions respectively. The In 2 YbSbO 7 photocatalyst showed the highest activity compared with Gd 2 YbSbO 7 or Y 2 YbSbO 7 . At the same time, The Y 2 YbSbO 7 photocatalyst showed higher activity compared with Gd 2 YbSbO 7 . The photocatalytic activities were further improved under visible light irradiation with In 2 YbSbO 7 , Gd 2 YbSbO 7 , or Y 2 YbSbO 7 being loaded by Pt, NiO, or RuO 2 . The effect of Pt was better than that of NiO or RuO 2 for improving the photocatalytic activity of In 2 YbSbO 7 , Gd 2 YbSbO 7 , or Y 2 YbSbO 7 .
