-There has been little research on the harvesting time-dependent changes in the antioxidant activities of new varieties of highland cultures of Gomchwi (Ligularia fischeri) crossed with Turcs (Ligularia fischeri (Ledeb.)) and Nakai (Ligularia fischeri var. spiciformis), namely Sammany (S), Gommany (G) and Damogy (D). This study was conducted to assess the effect of different harvesting times on nutritional and health-related properties such as total phenolic contents, flavonoids, DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrasyl) free radical scavenging activities and reducing power. From these harvests, extracts were prepared using methanol. Total phenolic content in Jul 14-G (Gommany harvested on July 14, 0.172 ㎎·GAE/㎖) was higher than that in other products harvested after the same period (S, 0.154; D, 0.141 ㎎·GAE/㎖). Flavonoid content was higher in Jul 3-G (0.114 ㎎·QE/㎖), compared to Jul 3-S (0.113 ㎎·QE/㎖) and Jul 14-D (0.089 ㎎·QE/㎖). Antioxidant activities were higher in samples harvested after June 12 in all cases. On July 14, the highest DPPH free radical scavenging activities among all harvest dates were seen (92.875~94.595%). The reducing power was also dependent on harvest day (Abs 0.5~0.6 on July 14), showing a pattern similar to that of DPPH free radical-scavenging activities. Antioxidant activity and harvesting times seem to correlate with total polyphenol and flavonoid contents.Key words -Total phenolic contents, Flavonoids, DPPH free radical scavenging activities, Reducing power, Antioxidant activity *교신저자: kimmjo@kangwon.ac.krTel. +82-33-250-6413 † The authors contributed equally to this work.
The resistance levels of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), against 10 insecticides was checked and selected the applicable insecticide resistance markers. We conducted our study in 5 cabbage cultivation regions (Pyeongchang, Hongcheon, Bongwha, Muju, and Jeju) of Korea, over 3 successive years (2009-2011). We selected a multi-resistant (MR) strain from among the 5 field-collected populations. We analyzed esterase over-expression and mutation(s) in the target sites, by using native isoelectric focusing (IEF) and quantitative sequencing (QS). We detected esterase over-expression and StoF mutation in the acetylcholinesterase 1 gene (ace1) in all of the field-collected populations, including the MR strain. We did not detect the LtoF mutation, which is a well-known knockdown resistance (kdr) mutation in the para-type sodium channel gene (para), in the MR strain; however, the value of the MR strain for bifenthrin was 3,461-fold higher than that of the susceptible strain. Our results indicate that insecticide resistance is more effectively evaluated using molecular markers than by conducting a bioassay. The molecular markers StoF in ace1 and MtoL in para can easily be applied in diagnostic methods such as QS or PCR amplification of specific alleles (PASA). These methods may be extended to management of M. persicae resistance in the field.
A new Saxifraga fortunei cultivar 'Foxstar' was bred by crossing between 'Hongsaja' with red purple (RPN66A) colored petals and 'Yoangwoo' with light pink (RPN57C) colored petals. The selection and flower characterization were conducted from 2004 to 2008 in greenhouse of Highland Agriculture Research Center, NICS, RDA. The flowering of 'Foxstar' occurred from October 5 for 28 days, The number of flowers per plant was 160.0 with many flowering habit. The flower shows dark pink (RPN66B) color at the opening, The number of petals were 6.1, with a width of 1.9cm and length of 2.1 cm. The plant height was 12.6 cm, and number of flower stem was 10.2, and number of leaves per plant was 84.0. 'Foxstar' cultivar can be used for pot flower. Fifty percent shading is a good cultural practice against direct sunlight and soft rot disease would occurs usually by over-irrigation.
This work characterizes 'Yeolha', a new strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) cultivar that was released by the Highland Agriculture Research Center, RDA, in 2013. This cultivar originated from a 2008 cross between 'Goha' and 'Elsinyo' and showed excellent ever-bearing characteristics including continuous a flowering habit under long-day and high temperature conditions. It was originally named 'Saebong No. 5' after examining its characteristics and productivity in summer culture from 2010 to 2013. After two regional adaptability tests in 2012, it was selected as an elite cultivar and renamed 'Yeolha'. The general characteristics of 'Yeolha' include a semi-spreading plant type, elliptic leaves, and strong vigor in growth. Its fruit is conical and red. The soluble solids content of 'Yeolha' is 8.6%, which is 0.6% higher than that of 'Flamenco', but fruit hardness is lower than that of 'Flamenco'. The average fruit weight of 'Yeolha' is about 12.1 g and the marketable yield is 28,133 kg·ha -1 , which is 117% higher than that of 'Flamenco'. 'Yeolha' is resistant against Fusarium wilt. In addition, 'Yeolha' is suitable for four-season cultivation as a high harvesting cultivar because it shows continuous flowering under long-day and high temperature conditions.
