BackgroundLittle information about the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in yaks (Bos grunniens) in northwest China is available. Therefore, the objective of the study was to quantify faecal egg counts of gastrointestinal parasites (helminths and coccidia) in free-range yaks from Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, Northwest China.ResultsParasites were detected in 290 of 733 (39.56%) faecal samples. The results showed that Strongylidae, Trichuris spp. and Eimeria spp. were detected all year round, Strongyloides papillosus was detected in autumn and summer, and Nematodirus spp. was detected in both autumn and spring. In contrast, Fasciola spp. was only detected in spring. The prevalence rates of parasitic infections in different seasons were significantly different.ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this is the first investigation of gastrointestinal parasites in yaks (Bos grunniens) in Gansu, China. The results demonstrated a high prevalence of gastrointestinal parasitic infections, specifically GN infections, in yaks in GTAP and these infections can cause economic losses to the local cattle industry.
Canine demodicosis caused by ectoparasitic mites in the genus Demodex is a major and common ectoparasitic disease of dogs. However, little is known of the prevalence of Demodex infection in pet dogs in China. The present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Demodex infection in pet dogs in Guangzhou, Southern China. A total of 3977 pet dogs admitted to several animal hospitals in Guangzhou City were investigated for Demodex infection from January to December 2009. The result showed that 977 (24.57%) dogs were positive for dermatosis and 130 (13.31%) of the dermopathic dogs were positive for Demodex infection. No significant association was found between Demodex prevalence and season, age, and gender of pet dogs. Seasonal prevalence showed that the highest and lowest were in March (4.15%) and December (1.39%), respectively. The prevalence in male dogs (3.67%) was higher than that in female dogs (2.74%). Dogs of 1 to 5 year old were more commonly infected than other age groups. The present investigation revealed the prevalence of Demodex infection in pet dogs in China's subtropical Guangzhou City, which accounts for 13.31% of canine dermatosis cases. These results have important implications for conducting control strategies and measures against canine demodicosis in this region.
Mycoplasma bovis is a major bacterial pathogen causing mastitis in dairy cattle, pneumonia and arthritis, and reduced weight gain in calves and reproductive problems in both dairy cattle and bulls, resulting in significant economic losses. The objective of the present investigation was to examine the M. bovis seroprevalence in dairy cattle in Guangzhou, subtropical Southern China by using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A total of 370 serum samples of dairy cattle were collected between July, 2009 and March, 2010 from 5 different farms and examined for M. bovis antibodies using a commercially available ELISA kit. The overall seroprevalence of M. bovis infection in dairy cattle was 5.95% (22/370). One year-old dairy cattle had the highest seroprevalence (10.5%), followed by dairy cattle of 3 year-old (9.61%). Dairy cattle without pregnancy had the highest seroprevalence (9.26%), followed by dairy cattle with 2 pregnancies (8.62%). However, no statistically significant association was found between M. bovis infection and ages or numbers of pregnancies (P>0.05). These results indicate that M. bovis infection was present in dairy cattle in Guangzhou, subtropical Southern China, and integrated strategies and measures should be executed to control and prevent M. bovis infection and disease outbreak in the study region.
