A specific portion of our environment has been contaminated with Kepone, or chlordecone. Additionally, some specific human exposures to high concentrations of Kepone have been confirmed. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry involving chemical ionization and high resolution mass spectrometry were used to detect, identify and confirm the presence of Kepone, Kepone photoproducts and a reduction product of Kepone in environmental and human samples. Field desorption, field ionization and electron impact mass spectrometric methods, as well as infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques were used to characterize and identify Kepone hydrate and hemiketal in benzene and methanol solutions, respectively.
To determine computing needs, Information Services (IS) surveyed and interviewed a random sample of campus users. Results indicated that IS dealt most with the "power users" for the campus. In interpreting the findings, management concluded that IS products and services must be targeted at upgrading the user literacy level. The survey included recommendations for both academic and administrative computing and suggestions for management actions, including restructuring.Network enhancements addressed certain identified needs.
The SurveyLike individuals, organizations are creatures of habit and tend to slip into routine behaviors. For Information Services (IS), those routines limited contact with campus faculty, administrators, and staff to "familiar faces"-a handful of key users in central offices on the administrative side and a small number of faculty who actively sought IS assistance on the academic side. Unfortunately, focus on these small groups was causing the organization to fail in providing IS support to the entire campus.Convinced of the need to reach out to the campus as a whole, IS management nonetheless felt they lacked a clear understanding of the type of computing support campus users required. Thus, they asked, "To what degree are the users we presently have contact with representative of the entire campus?" If the users currently receiving support represented only a subset of sophisticated users, IS management would have to evaluate how services were delivered and how quickly new technologies such as client/server applications were offered.
Survey MethodsThe survey was structured using a two-step approach, with written instruments in addition to one-on-one interviews.Early in the development phase it became apparent that different written instruments were needed for the administrative and academic areas. Thus two were developed and sent to randomly selected faculty, administrators, and staff. Both included demographic items to help determine whether computer usage varied by school or administrative area, age, job task, or equipment available. Both also asked users to identify what computing equipment they had in their offices and homes, including the microcomputer make and model and the software packages they used. Under the assumption that memory, disk capacity, and peripherals would vary substantially, the written instruments sought only to get a very general idea of what was available to each user. The majority of items on both versions of the survey queried the satisfaction level of users with services provided by the Information Services organization. The instrument for administrative users focused on standard computer center performance items adapted from industry. Items on the academic survey focused on specific products or services. The human resources management database was used to select random groups for the written survey. Job codes were used to separate individuals with faculty appointments for the academic survey. Job titles unlikely to make use of computing resources (e.g., housekeepe...
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
