The Middle East can legitimately claim to be a source of the earliest thinking about ethical conduct in business activity. However, the current status of business ethics in the Middle East is checkered: efforts to advance standards have been uneven, and surveys reveal a gap between principles and practices. This article reviews the Islamic roots of norms and rules for the conduct of business, the current business landscape, and recent efforts to improve standards of corporate governance and business ethics in the region.
