Résumé Cet article liminaire propose un parcours historiographique dans les travaux sur les campagnes des actuels départements du Nord et du Pas-de-Calais. Il aborde en fait trois thèmes : d’abord un survol des recherches qui s’efforce de dégager les grands types d’approche en même temps que des moments ou des figures significatifs de l’histoire rurale septentrionale ; en second lieu un essai de synthèse des acquis les plus significatifs pouvant contribuer à caractériser le passé de nos campagnes ; enfin il s’efforce de repérer des zones d’ombre de nos connaissances et donc d’esquisser des orientations de recherche dans lesquelles peuvent s’inscrire les articles proposés dans ce numéro tout en formulant quelques directions de méthode, notamment celles qui justifient le titre « Pour une histoire décloisonnée des campagnes.... ». Cet article s’accompagne de la mise au point bibliographique proposée dans ce numéro et visant notamment à signaler de nombreux travaux de recherche universitaire inédits.
Er bestaat nog geen geschiedenis van de textielindustrie in dit département (Pas-de-Calais). De verslagen van de administratie in de 17de en 18de eeuw en het statistisch onderzoek tijdens het eerste Keizerrijk brengen aan het licht dat de textielindustrie niet de voornaamste ekonomische aktiviteit in het département was, dat bleef de landbouw. Tijdens het Ancien Régime bleef de vlasindustrie in de Leîevallei geconcentreerd, men bewerkte wol op het platteland in de streek van Arras, katoen kwam slechts hier en daar voor. Tijdens het Keiizerrijk kwam men nog niet tot de oprichting van grote stedelijke manufakturen, maar het volume van de handel en het prijsniveau schommelden dan voortdurend wegens de continentale blokkade.
