Actuellement on dispose d'un échantillonnage de 50 plaques sculptées en schiste, provenant de sites gallo-romains, urbains et ruraux de Bretagne. La cartographie montre leur usage principalement dans la partie orientale de cette région. L'analyse des techniques de réalisation permet de faire des observations sur leur travail et sur leur disposition dans les édifices. Un classement des décors permet de distinguer les décors architecturaux, les animaux marins et aquatiques, les armes, les motifs naturalistes figuratifs et les motifs géométriques. Une symbolique des boucliers est proposée.
Plusieurs fouilles importantes ont eu lieu à Rennes depuis la fin des années 1980. Bien qu’elles aient toutes concerné la moitié nord du chef-lieu des Riédons, les informations qu’elles ont fournies ont profondément renouvelé la vision de l’organisation urbaine entre le i er et le iv e s. apr. J.-C. Entre 2012 et 2014, les opérations archéologiques réalisées dans le couvent des Jacobins et sur la place Sainte-Anne ont encore apporté des éléments essentiels sur les modalités de fondation de Condate sous le règne d’Auguste. Elles confirment surtout que le cœur de la cité se trouve dans ce secteur précis où se concentrent à la fois les plus anciennes occupations et la plus forte densité de vestiges archéologiques. La découverte d’un imposant édifice public et la présence d’un monument de carrefour illustrent l’importance de ce secteur dès l’origine. Il n’échappera pourtant pas à un déclin momentané qui semble frapper l’ensemble de l’agglomération au début du i er s. Après cet épisode, bien avéré mais encore difficile à comprendre, la reprise en main qui s’opère sous Claude transparaît à travers l’aménagement des espaces publics de circulation et la construction de nouveaux bâtiments. Les fouilles traduisent alors le rôle essentiel des artisans, métallurgistes et céramistes notamment, dans l’installation durable de l’urbanisme, mais plusieurs indices posent aussi la question d’une implication des militaires sans qu’on puisse en évaluer le rôle précis et l’importance.
