Résumé Cet article présente les grandes lignes du programme de recherche lancé en 2003 sous le titre La Civilisation du Journal. Fruit d’une étroite collaboration entre historiens et littéraires, il se propose d’envisager l’histoire de la presse française du xix e siècle sous l’angle d’une histoire culturelle et littéraire renouvelée. Après un bref survol des orientations suivies jusqu’ici par l’histoire de la presse du xix e siècle, il précise ce qu’il entend par une histoire culturelle (centrée sur les usages du périodique et leur rôle dans la transformation des représentations et des identités sociales) et littéraire (centrée sur une poétique de l’écriture de presse et ses effets sur l’ensemble des conceptions et pratiques de la littérature).
