A Mahāsthāngarh (Bangladesh), la découverte récente d'une série de céramiques estampées de signes de bon augure à proximité d'un édifice monumental conduit à s'interroger sur l'environnement religieux de la ville ancienne. A la différence d'autres régions de l'Inde, la quasi-absence de traces archéologiques du culte pratiqué par les habitants du Bengale reste un des problèmes majeurs des études historiques. Or ces tessons de céramique qui, d'après leur profil peuvent être rattachés à des vases à liquide, portent un décor de signes de bon augure, courants dans l'iconographie bouddhique et jaïn essentiellement: srlvatsa, triratna, roue, couple de poissons, spirale. L'intérêt de cette série de céramiques est leur contexte homogène, bien daté par la chronostratigraphie (Mission franco-bangladaise du secteur Rempart est) au IIe-IIIe s. de notre ère, et leur localisation à proximité d'une plate-forme en briques de plan carré, articulée autour d'un trou central. Ces vestiges pourraient indiquer une activité religieuse, des rites de lustration ou d'offrande à un monument cultuel, peut-être un stūpa?
