Los rellenos sanitarios son utilizados como disposición final de los desechos de la población en el mundo, no obstante, el problema que se presenta es la aparición de lixiviados debido a la transferencia de agua a través de los residuos sólidos conteniendo alta carga orgánica, concentración de amonio y demás metales pesados generando gran preocupación ambiental. En este artículo se analiza mediante revisión bibliográfica los tratamientos biológicos anaerobios para la purificación de lixiviados de vertederos presentando buenos resultados en la remoción de contaminantes debido a sus sistemas con operación simple y de bajo costo, además destacan por su buen rendimiento para la producción de biogás que es de gran importancia para reutilizarlo como fuente de energía generando un ahorro económico. El estudio se enfoca en los siguientes sistemas: reactores UASB, sistemas anammox y bioceldas.
