Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar a memória construída através das imagens do fotógrafo Augusto Malta, que documentou um período importante da história da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, as reformulações urbanísticas conhecidas como o “bota-abaixo” ocorridas no início do século XX que visava a inserção do Brasil no ideário da modernidade europeia. Falaremos sobre o impacto dessas reformas sobre a população da cidade. Buscaremos igualmente compreender através da análise iconográfica de algumas de suas imagens, como duas diferentes identidades foram representadas: uma idealizada pelo poder público como Identidade Nacional, representando uma elite sofisticada aos moldes europeus, vivendo numa cidade modernizada, e por outro lado a identidade nacional mais real, de uma população pobre, mestiça e esquecida por esse mesmo poder, vivendo numa cidade decadente, suja e prestes a desaparecer. Sob a luz dos estudos de Memória Social, analisaremos de que maneira podemos perceber uma disputa de memórias.
