Introducción: tras la pandemia del COVID-19 y los casos de escasez de equipo de protección personal (EPP) se ha documentado el uso de máscaras de snorkel modificadas, buscando brindar protección respiratoria y facial contra los aerosoles del SARS-CoV-2. Sin embargo, no hay reportes de cambios clínicos que puedan ocurrir en el usuario, además de la percepción de usabilidad por parte de los trabajadores de salud. Métodos: serie de casos. Equipo: snorkel mask®, adaptador 3D y filtro antimicrobiano. Se controló el nivel de CO2, la frecuencia respiratoria, la oximetría, el pulso y la presión arterial por una hora. Durante este tiempo se simularon actividades relacionadas con la atención al paciente. Al final se evaluaron las características de uso a través de una encuesta. Resultados: se incluyeron 14 voluntarios. Después de una hora de uso continuo, los parámetros clínicos fueron predominantemente normales. El 85 % de los participantes prefirió esta máscara de snorkel modificada en lugar del equipo de protección personal establecido para COVID-19 (gafas, máscara N95 y visera). Conclusiones: la máscara de snorkel adaptada podría ser una alternativa como EPP en situaciones de escasez de recursos. Lo anterior solo se considera en el marco de su aceptabilidad por un grupo de profesionales de la salud, además de la poca afectación en sus constantes vitales evaluadas en esta serie de casos. Se requiere evaluaciones más objetivas de usabilidad y efectividad.
