Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) allows the automatic networking configuration of computers and devices (clients) in Internet Protocol (IP) networks. It is used by clients to request an IP address and obtain configuration parameters (netmask, router IP address, Domain Name Server –DNS– address etc.) for IP networking from a DHCP server. For this purpose, a pool of IP addresses is administered and maintained in a DHCP server. In order to reuse an IP address that is no longer needed by the client to which it was assigned, a lease time parameter is applied. That is, each client leases an IP address from the chosen DHCP server for a limited period of time.
To save energy consumption of Ethernet switches, IEEE has standardized a new energy-efficient operation for Ethernet links with a low-power state and transition mechanisms between the high-power state for transporting traffic and the low-power state.In this paper, we propose a queueing model with the Markov Modulated Compound Poisson Process that is able to characterize backbone packet traffic. We derive a closed-form solution for the stationary distribution of the proposed queueing model. We show that our model can capture an entire system where the transition times are constant.
A new queuing model is proposed for the performance evaluation of the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) protocol, with respect to a specified user, in UMTS networks. This analytical model is an integrated one capable of capturing many complicated features of HSDPA operation such as correlated and bursty traffic, channel fading, channel allocation policy and packet-losses in the air interface. The validation of the model for comparing the user terminal categories is performed with a detailed simulation of HSDPA terminals with "real" traffic traces. It is shown that the model is quite accurate to predict and compare the throughput of the HSDPA terminal categories.
