Nous proposons dans cette contribution d’interroger les processus menant de jeunes français, résidant dans un quartier enclavé d’une ville française moyenne, à la conversion religieuse « radicale ». Pour ce faire, nous partons du postulat suivant : la conversion à l’islam radical répond à une logique psychosociale mêlant des facteurs individuels et sociétaux. Afin de cerner plus précisément ce phénomène, nous nous sommes appuyés sur une enquête de terrain, basée sur une méthodologie qualitative. Composée d’observations et d’entretiens menés auprès de seize personnes engagées dans un processus de conversion, cette étude permet de structurer le processus en cinq séquences : une quête de sens consécutive à un choc biographique ; une rencontre avec un prosélyte ou un prédicateur ; un engagement dans la « carrière radicale » ; un maintien de l’engagement associé à un renversement de stigmate ; et l’adoption d’une posture prosélyte au djihadisme ou au repentir.
