AbstractAs a social construction, the law became a study object of sociology, with the emergence of the sociology of law as a specific branch of analysis of legal institutions and their subjects. In general, the contributions of this field of study have turned their attention to the performance of certain legal agents, such as ministers, judges and prosecutors, leaving out the analyzes about the lawyers, which, as an essencial function of justice, also collaborate in the construction of law and judicial institutions. In this context, this article aims to map the sociology of law field about the place occupied by lawyers in the authors' reflections, identifying the central ideas about the lawyer’s performance, as well as the approaches used in these works. To this purpose, will be highlighted studies of sociologists about the actions of lawyers, starting with Weber and Bourdieu, and then moving on to the production of the sociology of law in Brazil. It can be seen that, although there are still few studies on this subject in the sociology of law, some authors have developed works about advocacy, revealing an open field to several possibilities of approach.
