Modeling techniques applied to agriculture can be useful to define research priorities and understanding the basic interactions of the soil-plant-atmosphere system. Using a model to estimate the importance and the effect of certain parameters, a researcher can notice which factors can be most useful. The modeler should define his objectives before beginning his work and construct a model that fulfills the proposed objectives. The knowledge of the Leaf Area Index (LAI) variation during the whole crop cycle is essential to the modeling of the plant growth and development and, consequently, of the crop yield. Sugarcane LAI evolution models were developed for different crop cycles, by adjusting observed LAI values and growing degree-days summation data on a power-exponential function. The resultant equations simulate adequately the LAI behavior during the entire crop cycle. The effect of different water stress levels was calculated in different growth periods, upon the LAI growth The LAI growth deficit was correlated with the ratio between actual evapotranspiration and máximum evapotranspiration, and a constant named kuu was obtained hi each situation. It was noticed that the k LAI must be estimated not Just for different growth periods, but also for different water stress levels in each growth period. As equações obtidas modelam adequadamente a variação do IAF durante todo o ciclo.
These difficulties make root architecture virtually impossible to be properly analyzed and understood by classical statistics, being simulation modeling an attractive approach. The plant species studied in this paper was soybean, a herbaceous dicotyledon, since most of the structural and functional investigations on root systems have been carried out for a few monocotyledon species. Insufficient phosphorus supply in agricultural soils often affects crop yield, and therefore the effects of soil P concentration on soybean root architecture were studied. The proposed simulation model is a promising methodology for root data analysis, allowing a proper visualization of different plant adaptation strategies, as reflected by different root architectures.
The first models of temporal variation of root systems appeared over 20 years ago. The complex architectural geometry of root systems; the wide range in size and diameter and the rapid growth and decomposition of finest roots; the different physiological activity of roots of different ages; the complex microbial processes occurring at the root-soil interface; the symbiotic relationships in the rhizosphere; the variable soil environment (physical, chemical and biological) in which roots develop are the challenges of quantifying the root growth. The models are not simple mechanisms to archive information in order to produce forecasts. Modeling represents a better way of synthesizing knowledge about different components of a system, summarizing data, and transferring research results to users. THE CHALLENGE OF MODELING ROOT GROWTH AND OTHER BELOW GROUND PROCESSESDuring the plant vegetative growth, its root system expands vertically and laterally, occupying a volume of soil that may be larger than the dimensions of the plant shoot system.Fine roots can represent more than 50% of the total mass of roots, and these present a high turnover rate: growing, being active for a few days, dying, decomposing, and being replaced by new fine roots.
