An assessment of Ganga river water quality at different ghats of Haridwar, showed high TDS (782.15 mg L(-1)) and BOD (21.76 mg L(-1)) levels at the mixing points of sewage discharge channels and the water was found to be contaminated with appreciable amounts of toxic metals; Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr and Mn (0.178, 0.566, 0.199, 0.177 and 0.160 mg L(-1)). The Ganga water supported exuberant growth of algae and aquatic macrophytes in littoral zone of river, which accumulated appreciable amount of metals in their tissues. Results showed possibility of using metal accumulation potential of plants and algae for monitoring low level of metal contamination vis-a-vis their use in renovating sewage by treating into especially designed constructed wetland.
Bromus husainii, a new species of Poaceae collected from Valley of Flowers National Park, Uttarakhand, is described and illustrated. The new species is closely related to B. confinis in having similar rhizomatous habit and purple-tinged spikelets but differs by the characters of inflorescence with heteromorphic spikelets and a band of hairs present on its collar. Moreover, presence of robust spikelets make it different from other species of Bromus.
Calamagrostis nandadeviensis, a new species of Calamagrostis (Poaceae: Agrostidinae) from India (Valley of Flowers National Park of Uttarakhand and Rohtang Pass of Himachal Pradesh) is described and illustrated. C. nandadeviensis is morphologically allied to C. lahulensis and C. scabrescens but differs from them in having deeply bifid palea and fused lodicules. Data on distribution, habitat, biotic association are presented along with an illustration and comparative photo plate.
The present work is a critical assessment of published literature, herbarium records and field observations on the diversity, distribution and endemism in the tribe Andropogoneae belonging to the family Poaceae (Grasses) from Western Himalaya. A total of 33 genera with 113 species and one sub-species have been recorded from Western Himalaya. Maximum species diversity has been observed between an elevation of 1500 6 2000 m asl and the most diverse genus is Cymbopogon which is represented by 12 species and one sub-species. The tribe is of enormous economic potential and thereby needs documentation of its diversity and conservation status.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
