The thermodynamic studies indicated that the biosorption process was spontaneous and endothermic in nature under studied conditions. For all the tested biosorbents, biosorption kinetic was best described by the pseudo-second-order model.
Microalgae Pseudopediastrum boryanum (Turpin) E. Hegewald was chosen as a subject for the present research due to its potential uses of wastewater treatment and biodiesel production. In the present study, we investigated the growth and biomass production of P. boryanum through use of semi-continuous cultures employing two growth media (Allen and BG-11). In our previous study, P. boryanum was isolated from different freshwater reservoir through the dilution technique. The isolated P. boryanum strain was inoculated with 270 mL of medium + 30 mL of suspension culture and the 16:8 light/dark photoperiod was applied. Optical density was recorded by using UV-Visible spectrophotometer at 670 nm, and cell count examination was performed through drop count method. Besides, dry weight and chlorophyll-a concentration of strain were determined. The highest cell density (3.67x10 6 cells/mL), dry weight (0.032 g/mL) and chlorophyll-a (16.39 µgL -1 ) production were observed in the Allen medium. Growth rates of P. boryanum were found to be 0.6676 d -1 in the Allen and 0.6021 d -1 in the BG-11 medium. Keywords: Pseudopediastrum boryanum, optical density, cell density, growth parameters, culture conditions.

Cultural collections, whether created by government or private organizations, are important to meet the needs of scientific studies, biotechnology and bioindustry. They are also regarded as an important center for biodiversity and the conservation of the natural resources of the countries. Biological Research Center (BRC) serves as depots for live resource materials, supplies, and as sources of relevant information to the public. When culture collections are planned, it is necessary to take into account culture species, quantity and the preservation method. Along with several other methods applied toward preservation, lyophilization and cryopreservation are the most widely used in micro algal collections. The necessary criteria such as memorandum of agreements (MoA), collaboration with different centers, legal and quality control procedures, required to be possesed by a culture collection, have all been defined by the World Federation of Culture Collection (WFCC). This paper therefore, reviews the postions of microalgae in ecosystem, aims the protection of microalgae as biological resources for human life and activities, the establishement of culture collections and provides a general view about the subject.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
