BREED AND HETEROSIS EFFECT ON AGE AND WEIGHT AT PUBERTY AND REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCE OF BEEF HEIFERSABSTRACT -The effect of breed and heterosis on age and weight at puberty and reproductive performance at the first breeding season of beef heifers were evaluated. Seventy four Charolais (C), Nellore (N), ½ CN and ½ NC females, born in 1987 and 1988, were used. The females were kept on cultivated pasture during the first and second winter, and on native pasture the rest of the time. Heterosis for live weight at the different ages, ranged from 12.8 to 14.6%. Crossbred heifers, ½ CN and ½ NC, reached puberty 89 days earlier than straightbreds, resulting a heterosis of -12.9%. Average age at puberty was 623, 754, 568 and 634 days, respectively, for C, N, ½ CN and ½ NC. Average live weight at puberty was 352, 299, 323 and 368 kg, respectively. Heterosis for percentage of heifers showing heat until 18, 24 and 28 months of age was 76.9, 67.6 and 17.6%, respectively. The percentage of heifers pregnant at the end of the first breeding season, 25 to 28 months, was 94.4, 53.4, 99.4 and 97.5%, respectively, for C, N, ½ CN and ½ NC. Heavier heifers at weaning and at 12 months reached puberty earlier, being the correlation coeficients of -.39 and -.56, respectively.

RESUMO -O objetivo deste experimento foi avaliar o desenvolvimento, até os 24 meses de idade, de machos de dois sistemas de acasalamento, puros (Charolês -C e Nelore -N) e cruzados ( 1/2 CN, 1/2 NC), submetidos a duas idades de desmame, T3 -desmame aos 3 meses de idade e T7 -desmame aos 7 meses de idade. Os animais foram mantidos do nascimento ao desmame com as vacas em pastagem nativa e, após o desmame, ambos os animais do T3 e T7 foram mantidos por um período de 30 dias em curral e alimentados no cocho. Os animais do T3, do 4 o ao 7 o mês, foram mantidos em pastagem de milheto (Pennisetum americanum). Os pesos aos 3, 7, 12, 18 e 24 meses de idade e os ganhos de peso médios diários (GMD) entre as diferentes idades foram coletados. Não houve interação entre o sistema de acasalamento ou grupo genético dentro do sistema de acasalamento e idade de desmame, para as variáveis estudadas. O GMD dos animais do T3 foi inferior dos 3 aos 7 meses e superior dos 7 aos 12 meses de idade; nas demais fases, não houve diferença no GMD. A única diferença para peso foi aos 7 meses, o qual foi superior para os animais do T7. O peso aos 24 meses foi 424 e 423 kg, respectivamente, para T3 e T7. Animais cruzados apresentaram maior GMD dos 7 aos 18 meses e foram mais pesados aos 18 e 24 meses. A heterose para GMD oscilou entre 0,6 e 29,9% e, para os pesos nas diferentes idades, entre -0,68 e 12,41%. Quando as condições de alimentação são adequadas, o desmame aos 3 meses não influi no peso de abate aos 24 meses de idade.Palavras-chave: Charolês, cruzamento, desmame precoce, heterose, Nelore Performance of Beef Cattle of Different Genetic Groups Weaned at 3 or 7 Months of AgeABSTRACT -The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the performance up to 24 months of age of males from two breeding systems, straightbred (Charolais -C and Nellore -N) and crossbred (1/2 CN, 1/2 NC), submitted to two ages of weaning: T3-weaning at three months of age; T7-weaning at 7 months of age. The calves were maintained from birth to the weaning time with the cows on native pasture and, after weaning, both animals from T3 and T7 were maintained during a period of 30 days in a feedlot. The animals from T3, from 4 to 7 months, were maintained on pearl millet pasture (Pennisetum americanum). The weights at 3, 7, 12, 18 and 24 months of age and the average daily gain (ADG) among the different ages were collected. There was no interaction between the breeding system and genetic group within breeding system and age at weaning for the studied variables. The average daily gain of the T3 calves was lower from 3 to 7 months and higher from 7 to 12 months, afterward no difference was observed in the ADG. The only difference for weight was at 7 months, when T7 calves showed higher weight. The weight at 24 months was 424 and 423 kg, respectively, for T3 and T7. The crossbred animals showed higher ADG from 7 to 18 months and were heavier at 18 and 24 months. RESUMO -Foi avaliado o desempenho de vacas Charolês (C) e Nelore (N), agrupadas em três classes de idade, jovens (3 e 4 anos), adultas (5 a 7 anos) e velhas (8 ou mais anos), desmamadas aos três (precoce) ou sete meses no outono (tradicional). O peso no outono das vacas desterneiradas aos três meses (T3) foi 45 kg superior ao das vacas com remoção do bezerro aos sete meses (T7). O estado corporal aos sete meses também foi melhor nas vacas do T3 (3,3 contra 2,1 pontos). Vacas do T3 apresentaram maior ganho de peso do parto ao final do período reprodutivo e apresentaram maiores porcentagem de cio (81 contra 51%) e prenhez (67,2 contra 37,3%) e menor intervalo do parto ao primeiro cio pós-parto (102 contra 114 dias) que vacas do T7. Vacas adultas apresentaram melhor estado corporal aos sete meses e tiveram melhor desempenho reprodutivo do que vacas velhas e jovens. A diferença na porcentagem de prenhez entre o T3 e T7 foi mais evidente nas vacas jovens (42,11 contra 12,5%) e velhas (51,72 contra 35,71%) que nas adultas (62,50 contra 53,33%). Vacas C foram mais pesadas que as N, ao parto, aos três e sete meses pós-parto e apresentaram melhor estado corporal aos sete meses. O efeito do desmame precoce no desempenho reprodutivo foi mais evidente nas vacas C. A porcentagem de fêmeas prenhes nas C foi de 80,60% para o T3 e 41,90% para o T7, já nas N as porcentagens foram de 45,50 e 30,00%, respectivamente, para o T3 e T7. O trabalho foi realizado na UFSM e teve por objetivo verificar as diferenças de comportamento entre 12 bovinos (Polled Hereford) e 12 bubalinos (Mediterrânea) de sobreano alimentados com dois tipos de volumoso. O confinamento foi semi-coberto, sendo os animais distribuídos em 8 piquetes de 50m² (três animais por piquete), onde tinham livre acesso à água (bebedouro regulado por bóia automática), alimento (90cm de cocho por animal) e mistura mineral. A alimentação fornecida duas vezes ao dia e à vontade era constituída de volumoso (cana-de-açúcar picada ou silagem de milho - 70% da matéria seca da dieta) e concentrado. As observações foram feitas de uma torre de 6m de altura. Os animais identificados com números à tinta foram observados durante 4 períodos de 24 horas no mês de agosto de 1989. As leituras foram tomadas a intervalos regulares de 5 minutos. A espécie animal foi a maior fonte de variação. Houve interação significativa (P < 0,05) entre espécie e volumoso no tempo que os animais permaneceram deitados e em pé durante as 24 horas do dia e ruminando deitado no período diurno. Os bovinos dispenderam 21,7% do seu tempo com alimentação, contra 20,1% dos bubalinos (P > 0,05). Em ócio os bovinos ficaram 40,7%, contra 44,3% dos bubalinos (P < 0,05). O tempo gasto com ruminação foi de 35,5% para bovinos e 34,2% para bubalinos (P > 0,05). A fonte de volumoso não mostrou ter efeito significativo sobre as atividades principais. Em média o número de abeberações diárias foi de 4 tanto para bovinos como para bubalinos. A grande diferença encontrada foi no tempo que os animais dispenderam no cocho com sal mineralizado (0,8% para bovinos vs 0,3% para bubalinos, P < 0,001).

EARLY WEANING EFFECT ON CARCASS OF STEERS FINISHED ON PASTURE AND SLAUGHTERED AT TWENTY-FOUR MONTHSABSTRACT -Carcass characteristics of Charolais x Nellore steers, weaned at two ages: 90 (T90) or 210 days (T210) were evaluated. Sixty-three castrated calves, finished on Avena strigosa + Lolium multiflorum + Trifolium vesiculosum pasture and slaughtered at twenty-four months of age, were used. No significant differences were observed between treatments for final weight (T90=437 kg and T210=467 kg), dressing percentage (T90=53.33% and T210=52.21%), hot carcass weight (T90=233 kg and T210=244 kg) and cold carcass weight (T90=226 kg and T210=238 kg). Carcasses of the two treatments showed similar conformation (T90=10.8 points and T210=11.0 points). Also the forequarter, side and hindquarter percentages were similar between treatments, likewise no significant differences were observed for carcass, leg and arm length, arm perimeter and cushion thickness. Subcutaneous fat thickness did not differ between the two carcass groups (T90=2.56 mm and T210=2.27 mm). Results demonstrate that early weaning at ninety days of age does not affect carcass traits of steers slaughtered at twenty-four months of age, if adequate nutrition is provided during growing and finishing periods.
