We installed a dense, amphibious, temporary seismological network to study the seismicity and structure of the seismogenic zone in southern Chile between 37° and 39°S, the nucleation area of the great 1960 Chile earthquake. 213 local earthquakes with 14.754 onset times were used for a simultaneous inversion for the 1‐D velocity model and precise earthquake locations. Relocated artificial shots suggest an accuracy of the earthquake hypocenter of about 1 km (horizontally) and 500 m (vertically). Crustal events along trench‐parallel and transverse, deep‐reaching faults reflect the interseismic transpressional deformation of the forearc crust due to the subduction of the Nazca plate. The transverse faults seems to accomplish differential lateral stresses between subduction zone segments. Many events situated in an internally structured, planar seismicity patch at 20 to 40 km depth near the coast indicate a stress concentration at the plate's interface at 38°S which might in part be induced by the fragmented forearc structure.

[1] We use traveltime data of local earthquakes and controlled sources observed by a large, temporary, amphibious seismic network to reveal the anatomy of the southcentral Chilean subduction zone (37-39°S) between the trench and the magmatic arc. At this location the giant 1960 earthquake (M = 9.5) nucleated and ruptured almost 1000 km of the subduction megathrust. For the three-dimensional tomographic inversion we used 17,148 P wave and 10,049 S wave arrival time readings from 439 local earthquakes and 94 shots. The resolution of the tomographic images was explored by analyzing the model resolution matrix and conducting extensive numerical tests. The downgoing lithosphere is delineated by high seismic P wave velocities. High v p /v s ratio in the subducting slab reflects hydrated oceanic crust and serpentinized uppermost oceanic mantle. The subducting oceanic crust can be traced down to a depth of 80 km, as indicated by a low velocity channel. The continental crust extends to approximately a 50-km depth near the intersection with the subducting plate. This suggests a wide contact zone between continental and oceanic crust of about 150 km, potentially supporting the development of large asperities. Eastward the crustal thickness decreases again to a minimum of about a 30-km depth. Relatively low v p /v s at the base of the forearc does not support a large-scale serpentinization of the mantle wedge. Offshore, low v p and high v p /v s reflect young, fluid-saturated sediments of forearc basins and the accretionary prism.

ShearerKeywords: subduction post-seismic megathrust afterslip GPS MauleThe excellent spatial coverage of continuous GPS stations in the region affected by the Maule 8.8 2010 earthquake, combined with the proximity of the coast to the seismogenic zone, allows us to model megathrust afterslip on the plate interface with unprecedented detail. We invert post-seismic observations from continuous GPS sites to derive a time-variable model of the first 420 d of afterslip. We also invert co-seismic GPS displacements to create a new co-seismic slip model. The afterslip pattern appears to be transient and non-stationary, with the cumulative afterslip pattern being formed from afterslip pulses. Changes in static stress on the plate interface from the co-and post-seismic slip cannot solely explain the aftershock patterns, suggesting that another process -perhaps fluid related -is controlling the lower magnitude aftershocks. We use aftershock data to quantify the seismic coupling distribution during the post-seismic phase.Comparison of the post-seismic behaviour to interseismic locking suggests that highly locked regions do not necessarily behave as rate-weakening in the post-seismic period. By comparing the inter-seismic locking, co-seismic slip, afterslip, and aftershocks we attempt to classify the heterogeneous frictional behaviour of the plate interface.

On 12 September 2007, an Mw8.4 earthquake occurred within the southern section of the Mentawai segment of the Sumatra subduction zone, where the subduction thrust had previously ruptured in 1833 and 1797. Traveltime data obtained from a temporary local seismic network, deployed between December 2007 and October 2008 to record the aftershocks of the 2007 event, was used to determine two‐dimensional (2‐D) and three‐dimensional (3‐D) velocity models of the Mentawai segment. The seismicity distribution reveals significant activity along the subduction interface and within two clusters in the overriding plate either side of the forearc basin. The downgoing slab is clearly distinguished by a dipping region of highVp (8.0 km/s), which can be a traced to ∼50 km depth, with an increased Vp/Vs ratio (1.75 to 1.90) beneath the islands and the western side of the forearc basin, suggesting hydrated oceanic crust. Above the slab, a shallow continental Moho of less than 30 km depth can be inferred, suggesting that the intersection of the continental mantle with the subducting slab is much shallower than the downdip limit of the seismogenic zone despite localized serpentinization being present at the toe of the mantle wedge. The outer arc islands are characterized by low Vp (4.5–5.8 km/s) and high Vp/Vs (greater than 2.0), suggesting that they consist of fluid saturated sediments. The very low rigidity of the outer forearc contributed to the slow rupture of the Mw 7.7 Mentawai tsunami earthquake on 25 October 2010.

SUMMARY We present a new tomographic model of the mantle in the area of the 2010 M8.8 Maule earthquake and surrounding regions. Increased ray coverage provided by the aftershock data allows us to image the detailed subducting slab structure in the mantle, from the region of flat slab subduction north of the Maule rupture to the area of overlapping rupture between the 1960 M9.5 and the 2010 M8.8 events to the south. We have combined teleseismic primary and depth phase arrivals with available local arrivals to better constrain the teleseismic earthquake locations in the region, which we use to conduct nested regional–global tomography. The new model reveals the detailed structure of the flat slab and its transition to a more moderately dipping slab in the Maule region. South of the Maule region, a steeply dipping relic slab is imaged from ∼200 to 1000 km depth that is distinct from the moderately dipping slab above it and from the more northerly slab at similar depths. We interpret the images as revealing both horizontal and vertical tearing of the slab at ∼38°S to explain the imaged pattern of slab anomalies in the southern portion of the model. In contrast, the transition from a horizontal to moderately subducting slab in the northern portion of the model is imaged as a continuous slab bend. We speculate that the tearing was most likely facilitated by a fracture zone in the downgoing plate or alternatively by a continental scale terrane boundary in the overriding plate.

Abstract. The Ligurian Basin is located in the Mediterranean Sea to the north-west of Corsica at the transition from the Western Alpine orogen to the Apennine system and was generated by the south-eastward trench retreat of the Apennines–Calabrian subduction zone. Late-Oligocene-to-Miocene rifting caused continental extension and subsidence, leading to the opening of the basin. Yet it remains unclear if rifting caused continental break-up and seafloor spreading. To reveal its lithospheric architecture, we acquired a 130 km long seismic refraction and wide-angle reflection profile in the Ligurian Basin. The seismic line was recorded in the framework of SPP2017 4D-MB, a Priority Programme of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German component of the European AlpArray initiative, and trends in a NE–SW direction at the centre of the Ligurian Basin, roughly parallel to the French coastline. The seismic data were recorded on the newly developed GEOLOG recorder, designed at GEOMAR, and are dominated by sedimentary refractions and show mantle Pn arrivals at offsets of up to 70 km and a very prominent wide-angle Mohorovičić discontinuity (Moho) reflection. The main features share several characteristics (e.g. offset range, continuity) generally associated with continental settings rather than documenting oceanic crust emplaced by seafloor spreading. Seismic tomography results are complemented by gravity data and yield a ∼ 6–8 km thick sedimentary cover and the seismic Moho at 11–13 km depth below the sea surface. Our study reveals that the oceanic domain does not extend as far north as previously assumed. Whether Oligocene–Miocene extension led to extremely thinned continental crust or exhumed subcontinental mantle remains unclear. A low grade of mantle serpentinisation indicates a high rate of syn-rift sedimentation. However, rifting failed before oceanic spreading was initiated, and continental crust thickens towards the NE within the northern Ligurian Basin.
