Der Bund/Länder‐Arbeitskreis Umweltchemikalien (BLAU) nimmt medienübergreifende Querschnittsaufgaben auf dem Gebiet der Umweltbelastung mit chemischen Stoffen wahr. Er hat maßgeblichen Einfluß auf die Formulierung des Chemikaliengesetzes genommen und befaßt sich heute u.a. mit Fragen des Vollzugs sowie mit ergänzenden Möglichkeiten zur Erfassung und Bewertung der Umweltwirksamkeit chemischer Stoffe. In diesem Zusammenhang sind die Möglichkeiten der Bioindikation, die ihren Niederschlag in der Umweltprobenbank und in einer Reihe von Länderprogrammen gefunden haben, von großer Bedeutung. Der folgende Aufsatz stellt die gekürzte Fassung eines für den BLAU gefertigten Arbeitspapiers dar; er soll einen Überblick über die Anforderungen und Möglichkeiten des Chemikaliengesetzes zur Erfassung der Umweltrelevanz chemischer Stoffe bieten und die Notwendigkeit ergänzender Verfahren der Bioindikation, die z. T. bereits realisert werden, aufzeigen.
