La caracterización de las concepciones de educación ambiental de los docentes en formación en ciencias naturales de tres diferentes universidades públicas de Colombia tuvo como objetivo comprender el concepto de educación ambiental de los estudiantes y establecer la relación del concepto entre los estudiantes de las diferentes universidades. Esta investigación parte del paradigma mixto de la investigación con corte descriptivo, tiene una unidad de trabajo de 33 estudiantes con una muestra de 10 a 12 estudiantes por institución. Las técnicas aplicadas fueron el cuestionario teniendo como instrumento un test tipo Likert para identificar concepciones de educación ambiental en la población estudiada y la técnica de entrevista semiestructurada teniendo como instrumento los grupos de discusión con preguntas estructuradas abiertas dirigidas al concepto de ambiente y el abordaje de las problemáticas ambientales. Los instrumentos fueron creados por el Grupo de Investigación en Educación Ambiental (GEA) de la Universidad del Tolima y validados por expertos. Se determinó que existe una visión de educación ambiental característica en cada grupo de estudiantes de las tres universidades públicas. En los estudiantes de la Licenciatura en Educación Básica con énfasis en Ciencias Naturales y Educación Ambiental de la Universidad de Antioquia predomina una concepción de educación ambiental ligada a la corriente etnográfica, holística y bioregionalista. En la Universidad del Tolima se evidencia un direccionamiento a la corriente etnográfica, bioregionalista y práxica. En la Universidad de Nariño se evidencian mayores acercamientos a las corrientes bioregionalista, etnográfica y holística.
