The use of renewable fuels is pointed out as one of the best solutions to decrease the greenhouse gases emissions due to the balance in the CO2 chain. In this context, ethanol stands out as one of the best renewable fuels. Furthermore, the direct use of hydrated mixtures of this fuel can improve the energy balance, reducing the fuel cost. The increase in water concentration leads to lower indicated efficiencies. However, the water promotes an increase on knock resistance. This enables the use of higher compression ratios, improving the engine conversion efficiency. The modifications in this parameter to use wet ethanol mixtures is not well established. In this way, this study, aims to evaluate the impact of compression ratio increase on heat release and performance parameters. Mixtures containing 4, 10, 20 and 30% of water in ethanol in volumetric content were investigated. The tests were carried out at 8 bar BMEP and 1800 rpm. As a result, the increase in water concentration allowed operation at minimum spark advance for best torque (MBT) for compression ratios up to 14.5. INTRODUÇÃOUm dos grandes desafios da indústria automobilística é desenvolver seus motores para atingir os níveis de emissões regulamentados, principalmente dos gases que intensificam o efeito estufa. Para isso, o desenvolvimento de combustíveis que produzam menos emissões de CO2 do que os combustíveis fósseis são indispensáveis. Visando atender às regulamentações apresentadas na Conferência de Mudanças Climáticas das Nações Unidas em 2015 [1], muitos estudos vem sendo focados na pesquisa e desenvolvimento de combustíveis sustentáveis. Tais combustíveis devem apresentar baixa emissão de gases do efeito estufa, serem renováveis e economicamente rentáveis para se produzir.Neste cenário, o etanol surge como um dos melhores combustíveis alternativos, com propriedades fisico-químicas interessantes para a combustão. O etanol possui ainda um grande potencial de produção, sendo obtido das mais diversas culturas, criando empregos e renda, especialmente para países emergentes [2]. Não obstante, ainda é necessário obter processos de produção mais baratos e obter subsídio do governo de forma a tornar este combustível tão viável quanto combustíveis como o diesel ou a gasolina.
