Purpose Soils are important regulators of Critical Zone processes that influence the development of geochemical signals used for sediment fingerprinting. In this study, pedological knowledge of tropical soils was incorporated into sediment source stratification and tracer selection in a large Brazilian catchment. Materials and methods In the Ingaí River basin (~1200 km 2), Brazil, three source end-members were defined according to the interpretation of soil and geological maps: the upper, mid, and lower catchment. A tributary sampling design was employed, and sediment geochemistry of three different size fractions was analyzed (2-0.2 mm; 0.2-0.062 mm, and < 0.062 mm). A commonly used statistical methodology to element selection was compared to a knowledge-based approach. The mass balance un-mixing models were solved by a Monte Carlo simulation. Modeled source contributions were evaluated against a set of artificial mixtures with known source proportions. Results and discussion For the coarse fraction (2-0.2 mm), both approaches to element selection yielded high errors compared to the artificial mixtures (23.8% and 17.8% for the statistical and the knowledge-based approach, respectively). The knowledgebased approach provided the lowest errors for the intermediate (0.2-0.062 mm) (10.9%) and fine (< 0.062 mm) (11.8%) fractions. Model predictions for catchment outlet target samples were highly uncertain for the coarse and intermediate fractions. This is likely the result of the spatial scale of the source stratification not being able to represent sediment dynamics for these fractions. Both approaches to element selection show that most of the fine sediments (median > 90%) reaching the catchment outlet were derived from Ustorthents in the lower catchment. Conclusions The different element selection methods and the artificial mixtures provide multiple lines of evidence for evaluating the fingerprint approaches. Our findings highlight the importance of considering pedogenetic processes in source stratification, and demonstrate that different sampling strategies might be necessary to model specific sediment fractions.
ABSTRACT:The lack of hydrological data in Brazil is the main limitation for structuring hydrological models, which are able to assist water resources management. Therefore, studies are needed to evaluate the performance of models without on-site calibration. Within this context, the aim of this study was to calibrate the SWAT hydrological model for the Camanducaia River Basin and to evaluate the performance of this calibration in a contiguous drainage basin, one of the Jaguarí River. For the calibration and validation steps, the SWAT-CUP program was utilized. Uncertainty analysis and calculation of efficiency indexes were carried out through the SUFI-2 algorithm. The SWAT adjustment in the Camanducaia River Basin obtained adequate results, with a Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient higher than 0.80 in the monthly time step and of 0.64 for the daily time step. With the parametrical transfer of this model to the Jaguarí River Basin, simulations were classified as very good in the monthly time step and acceptable for the daily time step. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the parametric transfer is a promising technique to model ungauged catchments, and can contribute towards water resources management in the river basins of the Mantiqueira Range region, as well as in other regions with shortage of hydrological monitoring.
In the tropics, water erosion is one of the most important factors leading to the degradation and deterioration of agricultural land. Olive orchards have a low canopy coverage, especially during the first years after planting, due to the low density of olive trees. Given the fast expansion of olive orchards in Brazil, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of cover vegetation on soil and water losses under natural rainfall. In addition, it was assessed the crop performance and the vegetation cover index in different management systems in olive orchards. The study was carried out in soil erosion plots, where water and sediment were sampled and measured over two crops season, under the following treatments: in the first season, bare soil with olive cultivation (OBS); olive trees intercropped with spontaneous vegetation (OSV); olive trees intercropped with jack beans (OJB); olive trees intercropped with millet (OM) and, as a control, only bare soil (BS). In the second season, the OM treatment was replaced by olive trees intercropped with sunn hemp (OSH). On bare soils, soil loss was the highest reaching 303.9 Mg ha -1 yr -1 and where the surface runoff amounted to 484.8 mm yr -1 . However, in the absence of competition for resources with other crops, olive trees performed best under this system. The olive orchards planted in shallow and sloping soils without cover crops showed unsustainable soil loss, crusting, and sealing in the superficial soil layer, which can progress quickly for soil degradation in the future. The efficiency in the reduction of loss in relation to bare soil was 4.11 and 12.93 % for the soil loss and 12.15 and 25.17 % for water loss, respectively, for olive with spontaneous vegetation and olive with jack beans. Cover crops combined with olive trees, and reconciled with the crop performance aspects of cultivation in tropical regions, is of great relevance for improving sustainability, especially regarding the reduction of soil and water losses due to water erosion.
Inimigos naturais são importantes para o controle de pragas em culturas agrícolas e florestais. A criação de insetos predadores em biofábricas deve ser de baixo custo para serem utilizados em programas de Manejo Integrado de Pragas (MIP). O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desenvolvimento de Podisus nigrispinus Dallas, 1851 (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), alimentado com larvas de Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus, 1758 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), criadas com as seguintes dietas: farelo de trigo, ração triturada ou peletizada para aves poedeiras e fubá de milho. Foram obtidos os parâmetros de desenvolvimento e reprodução necessários para calcular a tabela de vida do predador. Os parâmetros da tabela de vida revelaram crescimento populacional em todos os tratamentos. No entanto, a taxa líquida de reprodução (Ro) de P. nigrispinus foi menor quando alimentados com larvas de T. molitor criadas com fubá de milho, mostrando ser a alimentação menos adequada para esse predador. Por proporcionar maior número total de ovos, o farelo de trigo constituiu a melhor dieta para P. nigrispinus. Estudos sobre dietas de presas alternativas são importantes, pois podem favorecer a nutrição de inimigos naturais e, consequentemente, melhorar o desempenho das criações massais em laboratório.
