El concepto de ἄσκησις en el contexto filónico al igual que en otros entornos intelectuales de la Antigüedad, está ligado a los de esfuerzo y avance, porque, cuando se afronta un texto filosófico de esta época, hay que pensar siempre en la idea de ascenso espiritual, πνευματική πρόοδος, además de en el ejercicio que lleva consigo.
El texto de De vita contemplativa fue elaborado por Filón de Alejandría como un escrito encomiástico del pueblo judío, que a su vez estaba inserto en un conjunto de tratados destinados al mismo fin, la denominada Pentalogía mencionada por Eusebio de Cesarea, donde en cinco libros, como su nombre indica, se acreditaban las virtudes inherentes al pueblo hebreo. Esta serie de obras, de la que sólo han quedado tres, la escribió Filón probablemente, al menos en su mayor parte, durante su estancia en Roma con motivo de la embajada que el politeuma hebreo alejandrino realizó ante el princeps Cayo Julio César Augusto Germánico, más conocido como Calígula. En este artículo tratamos de descubrir cuáles fueron esos tratados y en qué orden se compusieron o dieron a conocer.
Resumen. Filón en el tratado De vita contemplativa nos narra el devenir cotidiano de una comunidad filosófica judía, integrada por hombres y mujeres, que viven retiradamente en un poblado a las afueras de Alejandría, junto al lago Mareotis: los terapeutas. En este artículo pretendemos analizar el caserío del poblado mareótico, el tipo de construcciones que albergaron a esta congregación, sus características y su posible ubicación. Este estudio nos proporcionará un mayor conocimiento del medio en que desarrollaron su actividad contemplativa y filosófica los terapeutas alejandrinos, y la relación de estas edificaciones con su propia vocación ascética y filosófica.
Filón en su tratado De vita contemplativa describe una comunidad ascética judía de hombres y mujeres, los terapeutas, que viven en retiro voluntariamente a las afueras de la ciudad de Alejandría, dedicados al estudio, la exégesis de antiguos textos sagrados y a la composición de escritos, himnos y cantos consagrados a Dios. Se trata de una congregación claramente representativa del género de vida contemplativo y espiritual. El filósofo, que residía en la capital del delta, los conoció bien y llegó a admirarlos en muchos aspectos, algo que queda patente en su citado escrito; sin embargo, en otras obras suyas deja traslucir una cierta precaución ante algunos comportamientos habituales en los terapeutas que, por una parte, implicaban un excesivo alejamiento de la realidad humana que les rodeaba y, por otra, denotaban una exagerada interpretación alegórica de los libros sagrados en sus indagaciones exegéticas, que los situaba a veces lejos de su auténtico contenido original.
