Günümüzde yaşanılan ekolojik problemler-küresel ısınma, iklim değişikliği, kentsel ısı adadı etkisi, doğal kaynakların kontrolsüz tüketimi ve yetersizliği, artan insan popülasyonu, hızlı kentleşme, karbon salınımı, yeşil alanların yetersizliği, toprak ve su erozyonu, taşkınlar- ışığında 1992’ de imzalanan Broudland Raporu ile alınan kararlar doğrultusunda yeni oluşturulacak peyzaj alanlarında ekoloji temelli yaklaşımlara yer verilmesi, doğal kaynakların gelecek kuşaklara aktarımının ön planda tutulacak şekilde mekânsal planlama kararlarının alınması, peyzaj tasarımında diğer kullanımlar gibi çocuk oyun alanları tasarımlarını de etkilemiştir. Bu çerçevede çocuk oyun alanlarındaki ekolojik bakış açısı ve peyzaj alanlarındaki güncel değerlendirme sistemi olan SITES (The Sustainable Sites Initiative) sertifikalandırması açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu kapsamda literatür taramaları yapılmış ve yurtdışı örnekleri araştırılarak çocuk oyun alanlarında SITES sertifikasına sahip örnek çocuk oyun alanı uygulamalarına yer verilmiştir.
Kent yaşamı içerisinde yer alan ve kamusal mekânlar olarak da adlandırılan açık ve yeşil alanlar kent dokusu içinde yapılar ile sınırlanmış, tüm toplumun yararlanmasına olanak tanıyan mekânlardır. Bu bağlamda mekânların herkes için kullanımı göz önünde bulundurularak tasarlanması ö(nem taşımaktadır. Kamusal mekânların sürdürülebilir kullanımı, mekânların kalitesi ve güvenliğinin yanı sıra erişilebilir ve tüm bireyler için eşit kullanım olanaklarına sahip olması ile mümkündür. Bu kapsamda kentsel mekânların tüm bireylerin kullanımına uygun standartlara getirilmesi temel hedef olmalıdır. Kamusal alanların, toplumun tüm sınıflarını bir araya getireceği ve herkesi kapsayıcı nitelikte "erişilebilir, ulaşılabilir ve yaşanabilir" mekânlar olarak kurgulanması gerekliliği ön planda tutulmalıdır. Çalışma kapsamında Ankara Batı Adalet Sarayı örnek olarak seçilmiştir. Bu çalışma ile, Ankara Batı Adalet Sarayı'nın görme engelli bireyler için erişilebilirliğinin değerlendirilmesi ve erişilebilir peyzajların tasarlanmasında örnek teşkil etmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Bu hedefle konu ilgili literatür taramaları yapılarak seçilen çalışma alanının görme engelliler açısından erişilebilirliği, evrensel tasarım kriterleri çerçevesinde arazi çalışmaları ve gözlemler ile desteklenerek değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmanın literatüre katkısı ve bundan sonraki çalışmalara örnek olması amaçlanan Evrensel Standartlar Kılavuzu'ndan yararlanılarak hazırlanan analiz çalışması, kamusal alanlarda erişilebilir peyzajların oluşturulması için bir araç olarak değerlendirilebilir.
Şehir kaplamalarında yer alan asfalt, cam, koyu renkli çatı vb. yüzeylerin gün boyu güneşten alınan ısıyı depolayıp akşam saatleri kentsel çevre sıcaklığında artışa yol açarlar. Bitkisel yüzeylerin arttırılması ve geçirimsiz yüzeylerin geçirimli hale getirilmesi ile hem kentsel ısı adalarının etkisi azaltılabilir hem de kaybolacak olan su döngüsüne kazanım sağlanmış olur. Bu kapsamda dikey bahçeler, çatı bahçeleri, yaya ve taşıt sirkülasyonunu bağımsızlaştıran yeşil yollar-bantlar (pathways) bu bitki dokusunu arttırmayı hedefleyen yaklaşımlar olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır (Korkut ve ark. 2017a; Hersek ve Korkut 2021). Daha az su ile sürdürülebilirliği yakalamaya yönelik, kurağa dayanıklılığı ifade eden su-etkin peyzaj düzenleme (water-efficient landscaping), az su kullanımı (low-water use in landscape), suyun akılcı kullanımı (water-wisegardens, water-smart landscape), yaklaşımlarının sonucu kurakçıl peyzaj (xeriscaping) yaklaşımı ortaya çıkmıştır (Barış, 2007).
