The study examines commercial banks profitability in Tanzania for the period of ten years (2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009).The study used National Microfinance Bank (NMB), National Bank of Commerce (NBC) and CRDB as the case study. The study employed the profitability measures of commercial banks, and the evidence of performance in terms of profitability was established based on return on average asset, net interest income to average bearing assets and non-interest expenses to average assets. The paper utilized panel secondary data from National bank of commerce, CRDB and National Microfinance bank in Tanzania for the period of ten years, and the hypothesis was tested to know whether there is a significant difference in terms of profitability by using ANOVA test. Finally the regression model was run to see the effects of capital adequacy, liquidity and asset quality on the profitability of commercial banks. The findings revealed that there is no significant difference on profitability among the commercial banks, in the context of regression model it has been noted that liquidity and asset quality has positive impact in profitability with exception to the level of nonperforming loans which has a negative influence on profitability. Also capital adequacy has shown negative impact on profitability. The study confirmed the profitability of commercial banks to stable and meeting the regulatory requirement of the Bank of Tanzania (BOT).
This paper examined factors influencing the intention to adopt cryptocurrencies in Tanzania. Specific objectives were to assess the roles of cryptocurrencies in Tanzania, to evaluate the risks of adopting cryptocurrencies to the existing financial and banking ecosystem and to examine the challenges of using cryptocurrencies in Tanzania. The study was carried out in Dar es salaam city. Purposive and snowball sampling technique were used to reach 368 respondents. The study employed quantitative method. Data were collected by using structural questionnaires and analyzed by employing regressions and correlationtesting. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was used to formulate conceptual framework and hypotheses. The findings indicated that the perceived usefulness and the perceived ease of use showed positive association on the intention to use cryptocurrencies. The ease and usefulness of cryptocurrencies was found in fulfilling various roles including making instant international money transfer, transacting at low charges, using it as an alternative source of currency, making free anonymous transaction and payingfor the online services that accept cryptocurrencies. On contrary, the perceived challenges and risks were insignificance to both the perceived usefulness and the perceived ease of using cryptocurrencies. The study concludes that cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin can be used in Tanzania to fulfill various roles. Furthermore, the study concludes that, risks and challenges are the key factors that delays cryptocurrencies from being used as a legal tender in many countries including Tanzania. The study recommends to the government of Tanzania to consider establishing a cryptocurrency based in Tanzania. Also, the syllabus on blockchain technology particularly cryptocurrencies should be established in both school and higher education. Finally, the study recommends central bank to review the Tanzania monetary policy in order to accommodate this financial technology
This paper gives an overview picture of commercial banks liquidity position in Tanzania for the period of ten years (2000 to 2009). The study employed the liquidity measures of commercial banks, and on that basis the performance in terms of liquidity position was established. The paper used the casual research design as the methodology of the study since the casual design is best suited to determine cause and effects of the phenomenon. This paper utilizes secondary data from National Bank of Commerce (NBC), CRDB and National Microfinance Bank (NMB). The criteria used is total deposit to core funding, liquid asset to demand liabilities and Gross loans to total deposit Tanzania for the period of ten years, and finally the hypothesis was tested to know whether there is a significant difference in terms of liquidity position by using ANOVA test. The findings revealed that the commercial banks under study have strongest liquidity level although it varied over years and National Microfinance Bank maintained strongest liquid level compared to the other two banks.
The study aimed at assessing local and international factors that affect participation of Tanzanian Small and Medium enterprises in market opportunity brought by African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The study focussed on Tanzania local SMEs engaged in garments and textiles, handicrafts, leather goods, footwear and agro-processing subsectors. The study utilized mixed approach methods and involved a total of 129 respondents. Questionnaire and interview were the main tools for data collection. Information was collected from the owners and marketers of SMEs located in Dar es Salaam, the officials of Ministry of Industry and Trade as well as the Tanzania Ministry of foreign Affairs and East Africa Cooperation. Quantitative data was analysed using SPSS software and qualitative data was examined using MAXQDA software. Findings revealed that both local and international related factors were inhibiting Tanzanian SMEs from engaging in the AGOA market. Such factors have been narrated in this paper and recommendations have been given in order to increase engagement of Tanzanian SMEs in the AGOA market.
