Las dinámicas de despojo y acaparamiento de agua son un eje central en investigaciones recientes que reconocen las relaciones asimétricas de poder y el poder de la naturaleza misma en el manejo, uso y control de los recursos. Sin embargo, no son muchos los trabajos sobre las alternativas de gestión local del agua. Este artículo aporta a este conjunto de literatura a partir de un acercamiento etnográfico al distrito de riego de Marialabaja (Bolívar), en el Caribe colombiano. El análisis de la construcción de esta obra ayuda a entender cómo la infraestructura se apropia como parte del territorio, a la vez que genera relaciones desiguales de acceso al agua. También muestra las consecuencias directas de una política de desarrollo rural en las vidas cotidianas de las poblaciones locales.
Las formas en las que las campesinas y campesinos de Montes de María han resistido a las violencias de la desigualdad y el despojo, aventurando otros futuros para el campo en el país, nos dice mucho sobre la historia contemporánea de Colombia. Conscientes de esto, las editoras de Montes de María. Un territorio en disputa han reunido una serie de textos que propone reflexiones situadas e interdisciplinares sobre disputas locales por el acceso al agua, la participación política y las desigualdades de género, raza, clase y edad. Sus principales líneas de análisis son la vida cotidiana, la reproducción social y el cuidado; los espacios de participación colectiva —incluida la participación de las infancias—; la guerra; la agroindustria, y el despojo de tierra y agua. En tiempos neoliberales, cuando se desestiman las redes de afinidad, compromiso político, cuidado y afecto que soportan la producción de conocimiento, este libro se impone con su vasto tejido etnográfico para demostrar que lo importante es la vida de las personas de carne y hueso y de las ecologías que la hacen posible. Quienes recorran sus páginas trasegarán por parcelas, montes, ríos, cocinas y huertas. Al final quedará una convicción: que la fuerza de quienes viven en Montes de María hace imposible contar una historia de vencidos.
