This study aimed to explore the associations among attachment system type, sexual satisfaction, and marital satisfaction in adult couples in stable relationships. Participants were 294 couples between the ages of 20 and 70 years who answered self-administered questionnaires. Hierarchical linear modeling revealed that the anxiety and avoidance, sexual satisfaction, and marital satisfaction dimensions were closely related. Specifically, the avoidance dimension, but not the anxiety dimension, corresponded to lower levels of sexual and marital satisfaction. Moreover, for the sexual satisfaction variable, an interaction effect was observed between the gender of the actor and avoidance of the partner, which was observed only in men. In the marital satisfaction dimension, effects were apparent only at the individual level; a positive relation was found between the number of years spent living together and greater contentment with the relationship. These results confirm the hypothetical association between attachment and sexual and marital satisfaction and demonstrate the relevance of methodologies when the unit of analysis is the couple.
The Experiences in Close Relationships (Brennan et al, Attachment theory and close relationships, 1998) questionnaire is one of the most widely used measures of adult romantic attachment. Despite the advantages of the ECR, the length of this measure may discourage its use in clinical and research contexts. Consequently, the goal of this study was to develop a brief Spanish version of the ECR questionnaire and to examine its psychometric properties when administered to six different Spanish-speaking samples from Chile. Confirmatory factor analyses replicated the twodimensional structure of the ECR and its invariance across gender. Results also supported the reliability and concurrent validity of our brief Spanish version of the ECR (i.e., Spanish ECR-12), by its association with measures of emotion regulation, dyadic empathy, psychological distress and well-being, and relationship satisfaction. The Spanish ECR-12 can be used by researchers and clinical professionals as an abridged measure of adult attachment.
Palabras clave: Cuestionario Perdón a ex pareja, propiedades psicométricas, invarianza métrica, personas divorciadas
AbstractThe objective of this study was to evaluate the factorial structure of the Chilean version of the Questionnaire of Forgiveness of the Former Partner (CPD-S; Yárnoz-Yaben & Comino, 2012) to examine its metric equivalence according to sex and type of relationship (marriages and cohabitation), to evaluate its association with mental health indicators and life satisfaction and estimate its internal consistency. For this, a sample of 715 separated or divorced Chilean people was evaluated. Data provided evidence that the instrument fits properly to an one-dimensional structure, that the scale is invariant according to sex and type of relationship and that it has an adequate internal consistency. In addition, significant associations were identified with measures of mental health and life satisfaction in the expected directions. In conclusion, the validity of the CPD-S scores for its use in the Chilean context is supported.
