La enfermedad de Alzheimer es un trastorno neurológico inevitable en el que la muerte de las células cerebrales provocan pérdida de memoria y deterioro cognitivo que desencadena en demencia, siendo la causa más común de demencia en ancianos. Generalmente, se desarrolla en personas mayores de 65 años incrementando su incidencia en aquellos pacientes de edad aún más avanzada. Se considera una de las principales causas de muerte a nivel mundial. El alzheimer produce la reducción del cerebro debido a la progresiva pérdida de células nerviosas y conexiones. Hoy en día, no existe una cura conocida para esta enfermedad, debido a que la muerte de las células cerebrales en la demencia no se pueden detener ni revertir. Tampoco se tienen medicamentos modificadores disponibles para el Alzheimer, sin embargo, algunas opciones pueden reducir sus síntomas y ayudar a mejorar la calidad de vida y, por lo tanto, ayudar a los pacientes hasta cierto punto. En tal sentido, por medio de la siguiente revisión bibliográfica, se busca dar a conocer las medidas necesarias para ayudar a los pacientes que padecen de esta enfermedad, adicionalmente se busca ampliar el apoyo a personas y cuidadores para optimar la conciencia y el compromiso que mejoren la calidad y la eficacia en la atención.
La presente obra es el resultado del esfuerzo académico de un grupo de profesionales de la salud, quienes han recopilado la información disponible con la evidencia científica más actualizada sobre temas que esperamos ayuden a los profesionales de la salud y a médicos en formación interesados en profundizar sus conocimientos sobre patologías frecuentes que pueden presentarse dentro de su ámbito profesional.
