ABSTRACT Objective:To assess if endodontic files subjected to the reuse and sterilization process are a risk factor in the patients care because of the presence of pathogenic microorganisms. Type of study: A cross-sectional observational and descriptive study held in Bogotá. Population and methodology: Endodontic files reused in endodontic root canals, sterilized up to three times, model numbers 25, 30 and 35. Four study groups were formed and subjected to sterilization in autoclave. For analyzing microbiological growth, files sterile were cultured in thioglycollate TSP for seven days, incubation at 35 +/-1 °C, check at 24 and 48 hours. The presence or absence of microorganism's colonies growing in the medium was analyzed, indicated by the turbidity in the environment. Results: The analysis of the number of endodontic files uses versus the bacterial growth shows the endodontic files unused and sterilized had a prevalence of 100 % of the absence of bacterial growth. The prevalence of bacterial growth was 83 % in endodontic files at first use. This prevalence was 92 % in the second reuse and 100 % at third reuse. The reuse of endodontic files sent to the process of manual ware washing and a steam sterilization, is not a recommended method, because it doesn't guarantee the sterility. This study demonstrated the presence of bacterial growth in all reuses.
