A expansão recente das relações capitalistas no campo na expropriação dos meios de produção dos pequenos agricultores, dos quais se destaca a terra, fez muitos camponeses se deslocarem para as cidades. Mas, neste contexto de expropriação, foram forjadas diversas lutas vinculadas aos movimentos sociais pela permanência ou retorno a terra, fazendo surgir, a partir do início da década de 1980, os primeiros assentamentos de reforma agrária. A conquista da terra de assentamento levou as famílias a declinarem atenção para a organização para produzir gêneros de subsistência/autoconsumo e comercial base familiar, cooperativas, grupos coletivos, etc. Neste entorno a construção da identidade camponesa nos assentamentos reúnem aspectos importantes: a luta pela terra, a família, o trabalho, a produção e as tradições culturais. Por vez, a agricultura camponesa é uma forma de produção em que o núcleo de decisões, trabalho e a renda é controlado pela família. De modo geral os camponeses veem a luta pela terra associada aos seus direitos de se reproduzir diretamente como individuo inserido na sociedade e com cultura própria, o que destaca sua identidade. A luta pela terra significa a luta pela vida, pelos seus direitos e principalmente pelo respeito da sociedade. Neste contexto tem-se por objetivo analisar a identidade camponesa pautada pelo movimento dos sem terra, pois é através de lutas e conquistas do assentamento que o camponês tem construído sua identificação, também objetiva se destacar a diferenciação da agricultura camponesa e agricultura familiar de uma agricultura do capitalizada. A autonomia no campesinato e sua identificação como camponês é que tem feito com que os assentados ainda permaneçam no campo, de modo que sua autonomia é determinada sobre sua força de trabalho e produção.
