As árvores constituem uma parte importante para a agradabilidade de praças em ambientes urbanos, servem de habitat para animais, aumentando assim a biodiversidade; diminuem a poluição sonora; absorvem gás carbônico da atmosfera e o devolvem em forma de gás oxigênio; influenciam no bem-estar psicológico e na qualidade do ar. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi listar e analisar as condições da comunidade vegetal arbórea das praças da região central do município de Caxias – MA. Foi utilizado o método de pesquisa quantitativo e qualitativo, que consistiam em conhecer as espécies, suas origens e a estrutura da comunidade presente na arborização de todas as nove praças centrais do município de Caxias - MA. Em novembro de 2015, realizou-se a coleta de ramos dos exemplares, que foram prensados e posteriormente identificados com auxílio de literatura pertinente, consultas a especialistas. Os dados da coleta dos espécimes foram lançados em formulários, e em seguida quantificados em tabelas e gráficos. Foram inventariados 263 indivíduos, distribuídos em 13 famílias, 25 gêneros e 29 espécies, das quais 16 são nativas e 13 exóticas. A família mais representativa foi Fabaceae com 9 espécies. Os resultados encontrados apontaram que a maior parte das espécies arbóreas nas praças estão em ótimo estado de conservação, porém revelou também um elevado percentual de homogeneidade nas praças do município de Caxias – MA, o que demonstra a necessidade da criação de um plano de arborização municipal visando o aumento da biodiversidade nesses ambientes e consequentemente evitar a uniformização da paisagem e uma desvalorização da flora local.
