Nano, micro, small, and medium enterprises (NMSMEs) are still heavily reliant on the “brick-and-mortar” system or traditional street-side business methodology, which is no longer as efficient as it once was. In contrast to the foregoing, this study examined the effect of new media on nano and micro enterprises (MSSBs) in Nigeria. Hinged on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and theory of digital divide, the research employed a survey method to generate responses from micro business owners within 36 business categories in Bauchi Metropolis by deploying 100 questionnaires to a random sample size. Chi-Square test calculator and sample median test were used to examine the various hypotheses at a 5% level of significance. The analysis revealed that there was no significant positive relationship between new media products' usage and increased business performance in Bauchi. This is because the majority of NME owners were still unaware of what new media products could offer them. As such, NME owners need to be trained to adopt the new media tools in order to boost NMEs in this region.
The rapid development of technology has penetrated almost all sectors of the society and makes any form of resistance almost impossible. The incorporation of digital technology into adolescent's daily life, as well as its impact on their cognitive, emotional, and social development, is growing by the day. They can use technology to play, explore, and learn in a variety of ways. This is because their brains are so adaptable, these learning opportunities represent a vital growth stage throughout this time period, which helps and encourages them to improve their communication skills and knowledge. No one will deny the numerous benefits that accrue from digital technology usage such as the internet and social network, which is an instant hit site that launches individuals into the world beyond imagination. A growing number of adolescents believe that happiness is linked to direct and indirect interactions with digital environments and technology that facilitate and mediate communication. This study investigated the effects of digital technology on adolescents in Nigeria.
Advances in technology have provided people with unparalleled opportunities to communicate efficiently and in real time. Adults with an inappropriate sexual interest in children have also benefited from developments in information and communications technology, using it to establish contact with them, to develop relationships, and to groom potential victims for sexual abuse and exploitation. Based on this, this study examined how social media has become a gateway for online child grooming. The study was anchored on the luring communication theory. The study adopted in-depth interview as its research design. The study used purposive sampling technique to draw a sample size of 15 experts. Findings from the study revealed that since the introduction of social media platforms, the amount of child sexual abuse content has been increasing yearly as these platforms have become a channel that offenders use in soliciting and sharing of explicit images and videos of minors.
This study was conducted to assess the adherence to advertising ethics on social media by firms and organizations in Nigeria. Anchored on the social contract theory and technological determinism theory, findings on the ethical issues associated with social media advertising in Nigeria revealed that most of the advertisements on social media platforms are full of deception; advertisements on job recruitments and product marketing are not in line with the ethical codes, and also that advertisers use deception to win the hearts of the public which ordinarily will not patronize their services. It was concluded that social media advertising in Nigeria has been a breeding home for deceptive advertisements where members of the public are tricked to patronize products and services that do not reflect their choices. It was recommended that social media advertising should be closely monitored by APCON in ensuring that the ethical codes guiding advertising in Nigeria are not violated by advertisers who have capitalized on the advantage of social media to mislead members of the public.
Digital media has had an unquestionable impact on participatory communication. The use of digital media has become a part of the community development framework for inclusive participation. Premised on the foregoing, this chapter sought to examine how digital media, an emerging development in Africa, has changed the status of participatory communication across the continent. Furthermore, it reviewed how this new phenomenon has paved the way for empowerment journalism and digital participation, thereby making participatory communication a community development tool in the 21st century that heightens collaborations. The study was anchored on theories of new media and development communication. The methodology employed a desk review. Findings showed that aside from vitalizing participatory communication for rural development, community journalists needed to be conscious that they create a new twist that clashes with what the mainstream media professionals do from a community's viewpoint, which can impede participation.
