This study aims to examine the usage of Edmodo for writing 1 subject for English Department students of StatePolytechnic of Padang. The design of this research is experimental design; two classes became the experimental and control groups.There were 25 students in experimental group and 27 students in control group. Edmodo was used in experimental group while thecontrol group was taught without using Edmodo. SPSS program was used to analyse the data. The result showed that theexperimental group had improved significantly in their post test result. The paired samples statistics result showed that the mean ofexperiemental group post test was 70.32, while the control group post test was 63.94. For the t test result, the p value (0.000) was lessthan 0.05 for the experimental group, which means that the null hypothesis was rejected. On the other hand, the p value of the controlgroup (0.06) was greater than 0.05 which means the null hypothesis was retained. From the statistic result, the study has proved thatthe use of Edmodo in writing class can improve students’ writing ability. Therefore, the researchers suggest other lecturers to use thedevice. However, further study may need to involve larger population in order to elucidate further the efficacy of this application.

Some experts have suggested the use of e-portfolio for students inindependent learning activities and others proposed this as one of alternative assessment tools. Barret (2005) defines e-portfolio as thestore to collect and organize portfolio artifacts in many types of electronic media such as audio, video, graphic, and text; it usuallyuses hypertext links to manage the materials, connect evidence to appropriate outcomes, goals or standards. However, the term of eportfolio has not been popular among English teachers in Indonesia, especially in English Department of the State Polytechnic ofPadang, although some lecturers in this institution have been using social media in giving instructions, collecting assignments andgiving feedback to students. Moodle LMS has been applied as a platform for the e-portfolio in this research. This research examineswhether the use of e-portfolio improves students’ English skills. The English skills include four skills: Listening, Reading, Speaking,and Writing. An experimental research design will be employed. More specifically, this article discusses the students’ responsestoward the use of Moodle LMS in their learning. The questionnaire was distributed to students to find out their perceptions aboutMoodle LMS. It was found that 64.62% of the responses indicates positive perceptions. In other words, the students gave positiveresponses to the use of Moodle LMS. It can be concluded that Moodle LMS is considered to be used supporting the use of e-Portfolioin the next main study, which will be conducted as an experimental study.
Studying a writing subject for fresh year students of English Department in State Polytechnic in Padang is sometimes found very difficult for them. Many students have lack of motivation in this subject. Not only that, lack of grammar and vocabulary is the main barrier for the students in learning writing in English. Using Edmodo, as an online interactive social networking, in writing subject can be an effective way to build students’ writing skill. The positive progress in writing skill begins to appear after integrating Edmodo in writing 1 subject for half of a semester. Most of the students have a better understanding in forming their sentences, indicated in their comments posted in Edmodo. The using of capitalization and punctuation in their sentences has also improved better indicated by their weekly posts in Edmodo. The students also showed a positive attitude toward the writing subject. Their motivation to write and post their comment via Edmodo can be one of the keys for them to improve their writing skill.
This report discusses the process of making English subtitle by using the Aegisub application for profile movie of Padang Pariaman Regency produced by local government. The aims of making the English Subtitle for the profile movie is to influence the foreigners to visit Padang Pariaman as the tourism destination and to make this place well known worldwide. The profile movie tells the hidden potential sectors of Padang Pariaman, including tourism spots, farm, plantations, marine resources, hospitality, culture and customs. There are three stages conducted in the process of making the English subtitle. The stages are transcription, translation, and subtitling. The transcript of the profile movie consist of 1200 words with 14 minutes, 36 seconds in duration. The translation process, methods, and procedures are applied. There are several procedures used in the translation stage such as transference, descriptive equivalent, modulation, transposition, and recognized translation Then, the English subtitle is created by using Aegisub application. So the result of this project is a new profile of Padang Pariaman Regency with the English subtitle. Hopefully, this profile movie can be understood by foreigners who have great interest to become potential visitors in the future.
During the Pandemic Covid 19 outbreak, online learning has become the only medium for learning activities. The face to face classroom has been moved to an online classroom instantly without preparing the readiness of students, teacher, and school. Thus, this research aims at investigating the barriers of online learning class amid the pandemic of Covid 19 in English Department, Politeknik Negeri Padang. This is a qualitative study. The data taken from interview and observation. The respondents of this research are the lecturers of the English Department of Politeknik Negeri Padang who teach Writing for Media course and the 4th semester students who take Writing for Media class in the even semester this year. 2 majors challenge reported are the setting of online class and the technology. Formulating the online class syllabus with the proper activity and delivering style becomes the greatest teacher challenge. Then, the limitation of internet facilities is general problem for the students live in remote area.
