This paper will spotlight changing views with regard to Indonesian men's body aesthetics. It will explore how, in response to discourse contained in lifestyle magazines, the physical bodies of Indonesian men have become the primary mechanism through which to exercise agency. However, many local Indonesian customs consider men's agency to be dependent upon their ability to control bodily desire. The paper aims to give an overview of how modernization and westernization as contemporary conditions in postcolonial Indonesia serve as the background to the narratives provided by men's lifestyle magazines. In order to provide an insight into how modern white narratives are valued in Indonesia, I will begin by examining the history of Dutch colonialism as a basis for racial classification. Proceeding, I will discuss how that history relates to contemporary practices of social stratification: the belief that being married to a westerner will bring perfection to one's descendants' genes; the trend of consuming special vitamins and formulas that will change particular parts of the body; and the assumption that having western genes will bring both success and wealth. Moreover, I will also discuss the ways in which the magazines define the "ideal" body, and how that "ideal" body thus becomes the hegemonic bodyone that functions as the gateway for men to achieve a good life.
Prior to Dutch colonization, there was a clear distinction between men and women in Indonesia. However, the hierarchical structure between these gender categories is part and parcel of the colonial legacy. Masculinity was first introduced in Indonesia during the Dutch colonial period as a repudiation from femininity. This signaled a significant shift, as previously being modest and part of the community had been valued much more highly in Indonesian society than was individuality. By asking to what extent men's gender expectations are subject to the identity politics of masculinity, and to what extent this is reflected on Indonesian popular culture specifically men's lifestyle magazine, I intend to shed light on the incompatibility of the identity politics of masculinity with contemporary Indonesian men. Towards this goal, I analyse eight men's lifestyle magazines, for they play a key role in contemporary modern societies, exposing men to generalized notions of what it means to be a 'man'. Spanning the period from the earliest men's lifestyle magazines published in Indonesia in the mid-1970s until 2015, I map contemporary narratives of masculinity in Indonesian context as a reflection of the effects colonial ideologies continue to have on Indonesian society and the division of gender roles.
Bringing the brand promise 'brings you closer to the people and things you love'. Instagram allows users to have the feeling of being connected to the world. In general, people use their Instagram account as a tool to show what is happening with their life. They consciously decide and choose information about their lives to be shared with significant other (Instagram's friends). In doing so, they create self-presentation that leads to the creation of a self-made identity. Instagram itself is filled with users' positive self-presentation. However, the trend nowadays, users have more than one Instagram account. Not only do they present themselves in a positive light or self-idealisation, but at the same time, they also share their self-actualisation. By self-actualisation, it means to express not only their flattering side but also the 'other' side of one's life. According to this research results, it can be defined as ones' unattractiveness, humiliating moments, and embarrassing sides, ranging from facial imperfections, depression, and struggles. This research itself used a complementary combination of content analysis, in-depth interviews, and observation participatory. By posing the research question regarding how Instagram users use their Instagram account to fix their daily life experience and its extent to their Catharsis. This research gives an insight into the limitation and the boundaries of how social media entangles with an individual's identity. While many studies on Instagram available discus the way Instagram activities work as the representation of individual's identity, they do not consider Instagram itself as the simulacra and how it changes the way we live our everyday life.
The implementation of the main tasks of the Indonesian Navy must be supported by the strength of the defense doctrine, human resources, and the main tools of the Indonesian Navy's reliable weapon system (alutsista). Observing the current condition of the Indonesian Navy, it is still far from the conditions that are expected to be able to carry out its main tasks, especially with the state of readiness of the defense equipment system. The current condition of the TNI AL's strength when compared to the strength of neighboring countries in the ASEAN region is still lagging behind. To be able to improve the readiness of the Indonesian Navy's defense equipment, including optimizing the use of national strategic industrial products to support the readiness of the Indonesian Navy's defense equipment, which has a fairly reliable ability to produce, assist maintenance and repair of defense equipment. The purpose of this paper is to find out and analyze the implementation of the use of national strategic industrial products, the implications for the support of the Indonesian Navy's defense equipment and how the solutions are to support the readiness of the Indonesian Navy's defense equipment in order to increase national security. This writing uses a normative juridical approach through assessing the capabilities of national strategic industries, fulfilling the needs of the Navy's defense equipment, human resources capabilities in technology transfer, budget support and optimizing the use of national strategic industrial products to increase national resilience. The conclusion is that the use of national strategic industrial products has a close relationship in terms of supporting the readiness of the Navy's defense equipment and increasing national security.
