Purpose-Machine learning is an area of computer science that learns from large amounts of data, identifies patterns, and makes predictions about future events. In the accounting and auditing professions, machine learning has been increasingly used in the last few years. Therefore, this study aims to review the current machine learning applications in accounting and auditing with a concentration on Big Four companies. Methodology-In this study, the machine learning tools and platforms developed by Big Four companies are examined by conducting a content analysis. Findings-It has been identified that Big Four companies developed several machine learning tools that are used for consistent audit coordination and management, fully automated audits (only in certain areas, such as cash audit), data analysis, risk assessment, and extracting information from documents. Conclusion-To benefit from the advantages, the Big Four companies are still expanding their portfolio of machine learning projects. On the other hand, the ethical problems and potential risks of security and violating privacy regulations by using machine learning applications in accounting and auditing should also be considered. This rapid transformation in the profession also creates a need for ethical and regulatory guidance and oversight for accounting and auditing companies.
In recent years, the blockchain emerged as a trending technology, and the innovations introduced by blockchain technology have influenced financial services as well as other sectors. The banks are currently using several blockchain applications, but they are not mature and still not widely adopted. Despite the numerous benefits, blockchain has many challenges to be solved, such as lack of regulation and governance; energy and other costs of development and implementation; interoperability, technical, security, and privacy problems; and user-related challenges. Therefore, this chapter aims to overview blockchain technology and discuss the opportunities and challenges for the future banking sector concerning the extant literature.
Purpose-The increasing use of digitalization and artificial intelligence applications has created an expectation that there will be a decrease in the use of human resources. There is no doubt that these technological developments that allow delivering faster and error -free work will also affect the accounting and auditing professions and will create essential changes in the roles and expected skills of profe ssional members. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the effects of artificial intelligence technology on accounting profession and education. Methodology-In this study, the accounting master's programs of AACSB accredited universities in the United States were analyzed, and the courses added to the programs to deliver new skills to accountants and auditors were examined. Findings-It is determined that there are many courses offered in the curricula of the programs on business/data analytics, management/accounting information systems, big data, data mining, and similar topics. Conclusion-For accountancy professionals to get adapted to technological developments quickly and to ensure that the transformation process of the accounting profession is completed in a short period of time, first graduate and then undergraduate program curricula should be updated by adding courses that will provide the necessary skills and competencies. Thus, it will be possible to increase the quality of accounting education by meeting the needs of the accounting professionals with respect to the new technologies such as artificial intelligence.
