Summary 1.Losses of farmland birds from the wider countryside have become a major conservation issue in the UK and Europe. Song thrush Turdus philomelos populations in lowland rural Britain declined by approximately 70% during 1970-95, most severely on intensively managed arable farmland. Comparison between a stable population on mixed farmland and a rapidly declining population on arable farmland revealed fewer nesting attempts each summer by birds in the declining population, and annual productivity was insufficient to maintain local population density. Inadequate food resources were the most plausible cause. 2. We compared breeding season habitat selection (using radio-telemetry) and earthworm availability (a major component of summer diet) for song thrushes in the same two farmland populations. 3. Territory settlement in the mixed farmland landscape involved the selection of field boundaries and woodland and the avoidance of arable crops. Field boundaries and gardens were selected in the arable landscape, while arable break crops and small areas of woodland were avoided. 4. Habitat selection (intensity of usage) did not change through the breeding season and did not differ between study areas. Scrub, woodland edge, wet ditches and bare soil in gardens were preferred foraging habitats, while cereals were avoided. 5. Habitat utilization (amount of usage) differed markedly between study areas. Woodland and grassland accounted for 53% of all habitat usage in the mixed farmland landscape compared with just 13% in the arable landscape. Gardens and arable crops were more heavily utilized in the arable landscape, accounting for 58% of all usage compared with 22% in the mixed landscape. 6. Earthworm availability declined markedly between April and June as surface soils dried out. Lower earthworm availability in the arable landscape was associated with more rapid and pronounced drying of surface soils. 7. Synthesis and applications. Lack of woodland and grassland, and the faster drying of surface soils in the arable landscape, combined to limit the availability to thrushes of key summer invertebrate prey. Loss of hedgerows, scrub and permanent grassland with livestock, and the wide-scale installation of under-field drainage systems, have probably all contributed to the decline of song thrushes on UK arable farmland. New agri-environment measures may be needed to provide the nesting cover adjacent to invertebrate-rich damp soils that song thrushes require to sustain annual productivity.
Summer diet and body condition were compared in two farmland Song Thrush Turdus philomelos populations in south‐east England. One population on mixed farmland was stable and the other on arable farmland was rapidly declining. Summer diet was dominated by earthworms, snails, beetles and insect larvae (mainly Coleoptera and Lepidoptera). In both populations there was a pronounced seasonal decline in the quality of the diet, with preferred earthworms dominating prey items during March–April and snails dominating during June and July. Dry weather during late summer was associated with reduced proportions of earthworms and snails, and increased proportions of spiders in the diet, and dry soil conditions had a weak negative influence on the body weights of chicks (in the arable population) and adults. Despite a tendency for earthworms to constitute a higher proportion of the diet in the stable population, and for snails to constitute a higher proportion of the diet in the declining population, the body condition of chicks and adults appeared to be unrelated to diet composition and did not differ between study populations. Changes in agricultural practices have probably caused a major reduction in the availability of key summer food resources for Song Thrushes on lowland farmland, and we speculate that breeding thrushes mitigate the impacts of food shortage on chicks by confining their nesting attempts to localities and periods where invertebrate food resources are adequate to raise a brood of young.
Factors affecting the diet, body condition and growth rates of Skylark chicks were assessed to examine their relationship to their agricultural environment during a critical period in the life cycle of this rapidly declining species. Rainfall explained the greatest amount of variation in body condition and growth rates and had a negative effect on both. Body condition indices were a good predictor of the likelihood of future partial brood loss to starvation. Low body condition in grass fields was related to a low diversity in the diet. Chicks fed insect larvae had higher body condition indices than those not fed larvae. Larger broods tended to have higher growth rates than smaller ones, whereas smaller broods tended to have higher body condition indices. Natural brood size reduction through the non‐hatching of eggs resulted in higher body condition indices than were found in nests with the same number of chicks where all eggs hatched, this effect being independent of absolute brood size. There was no significant difference between crop types in the distance adult birds flew to forage for food for nestlings and foraging crop destination had no effect on chick development. Differences between crop types in chick diet could be related to the documented effects of pesticides on different prey species. We suggest that recent agricultural changes have affected diet and possibly body condition, but that these effects are unlikely to have been an important factor in recent population declines.
Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos minor numbers have declined greatly in England since the early 1980s for reasons that are not yet fully understood. It has been suggested that the species’ decline may be linked to the increase in Great Spotted Woodpeckers Dendrocopos major, changes in woodland habitat quality (such as deadwood abundance) and landscape‐scale changes in tree abundance. We tested some of these hypotheses by comparing the characteristics of woods in southern England where the species is still relatively numerous with those of woods used in the 1980s before the major decline. In each time period, habitat, predator and landscape information from woods known to be occupied by Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers was compared with those found to be unoccupied during surveys. Before the main period of decline, Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers used oak‐dominated, mature, open woods with a large amount of standing deadwood. Habitat use assessed from recent data was very similar, the species being present in mature, open, oak‐dominated woodlands. There was a strong relationship between wood use probability and the extent of woodland within a 3‐km radius, suggesting selection for more heavily wooded landscapes. In recent surveys, there was no difference in deadwood abundance or potential predator densities between occupied and unoccupied woods. Habitat management should focus on creating and maintaining networks of connected woodlands in areas of mature, open woods. Finer‐scale habitat selection by Lesser Spotted Woodpecker within woodlands should be assessed to aid development of beneficial management actions.
