Factor analysis and bissegmented regression for studies about environmental stratification and maize adaptabilityAbstract -The objective of this work was to verify possible divergences among results obtained on adaptability evaluations of 27 maize genotypes (Zea mays L.), and on stratification of 22 environments on Paraná State, Brazil, through techniques of factor analysis and bissegmented regression. The environmental stratifications were made through the traditional methodology and by factor analysis, allied to the percentage of the simple portion of GxE interaction (PS%). Adaptability analyses were carried out through bissegmented regression and factor analysis. By the analysis of bissegmented regression, studied genotypes had presented high productive performance; however, it was not evidenced the genotype considered as ideal. The adaptability of the genotypes, analyzed through graphs, presented different answers when compared to bissegmented regression.
Factor analysis and environmental stratification in the assessment of soybean adaptability and stabilityAbstract -The objective of this work was to assess the efficiency of different methods of environmental stratification, the representation level of the evaluation places, and the adaptability and stability of soybean genotypes, through yield trials in the Paraná and Santa Catarina States, Brazil, in the agricultural years of 2000 to 2003, totaling 15 environments. For environmental stratification, the Lin's traditional method and factor analysis, allied to percentage of the simple portion (SP%) of genotype vs. environment interaction (GxE), were utilized. Adaptability and stability of the genotypes were determined by linear and bisegmented regression models. Twenty one soybean genotypes were evaluated on randomized complete blocks design, comprising three replications, and the analyzed variable was grain yield. RB 605 genotype is highly adapted and presents high yield. According to both methods, Palotina and Brasilândia do Sul localities can be reduced to one trial location. The factor analysis allied to SP% of GxE interaction is more selective to environmental stratification in relation to the Lin's traditional method.
-Soybean is cultivated in the wide range of environments of Paraná State. Selection for genotypes of high and predictable yields with wide adaptability are main targets of the breeding programs for this region. The adaptability and stability of 30 soybean cultivars of three different maturity groups (early, semi-early and medium maturity) with a focus on grain yield were evaluated in the
For doubled haploid (DH) production in maize, F1 generation has been the most frequently used for haploid induction due to facility in the process. However, using F2 generation would be a good alternative to increase genetic variability owing to the additional recombination in meiosis. Our goals were to compare the effect of F1 and F2 generations on DH production in tropical germplasm, evaluating the R1-navajo expression in seeds, the working steps of the methodology, and the genetic variability of the DH lines obtained. Sources germplasm in F1 and F2 generations were crossed with the tropicalized haploid inducer LI-ESALQ. After harvest, for both induction crosses were calculated the haploid induction rate (HIR), diploid seed rate (DSR), and inhibition seed rate (ISR) using the total number of seeds obtained. In order to study the effectiveness of the DH working steps in each generation, the percentage per se and the relative percentage were verified. In addition, SNP markers were obtained for genetic variability studies. Results showed that the values for HIR, ISR, and DSR were 1.23%, 23.48%, and 75.21% for F1 and 1.78%, 15.82%, and 82.38% for F2, respectively. The effectiveness of the DH working step showed the same percentage per se value (0.4%) for F1 and F2, while the relative percentage was 27.2% for F1 and 22.4% for F2. Estimates of population parameters in DH lines from F1 were higher than F2. Furthermore, population structure and kinship analyses showed that one additional generation was not sufficient to create new genotype subgroups. Additionally, the relative efficiency of the response to selection in the F1 was 31.88% higher than F2 due to the number of cycles that are used to obtain the DH. Our results showed that in tropical maize, the use of F1 generation is recommended due to a superior balance between time and genetic variability.
ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters of the IPR 114 maize commercial variety for breeding purpose and the efficiency of the method. It was perfomed two cycles of half-sib progenie, between 2004 and 2007. The progenies were evaluated in a randomized complete block desing with two replications per environments and the plots were composed of one 4 m length row spaced on 0.8 m, and five plants per meter. The trials were carried out in Londrina and Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil. There were evaluated 173 and 154 progenies for selection cycles 1 and 2, respectively, analyzing the following traits: plant height, ear height, days to flower, prolificacy and predict grain yield. In both cycles verified significant genetic variability between progenies. Significant selection gains were obtained for predict grain yield, showing 6.33 and 5.03% for cycles 1 and 2, respectively. The estimative for genetic parameters obtained in this work justify the selection program continuity of the IPR 114 maize population Keywords: Zea mays L., progeny of maize, genetic gain, intrapopulacional selection.
