El presente artículo aborda los resultados de una investigación sobre la función de tutoría en instituciones de educación superior (IES). El proyecto se llevó a cabo en dos fases: la primera permitió conceptualizar las competencias involucradas en el ejercicio de la función de tutoría desde el punto de vista teórico; la segunda incorporó la mirada y reflexión de un grupo de profesores/tutores acerca de su propia práctica tutorial. El estudio se apoyó en una metodología de investigación cualitativa; el análisis de los resultados se orientó desde el ejercicio fenomenográfico, que se aplicó a la descripción e interpretación de los datos derivados de la conducción de grupos focales con tutores y expertos sobre el tema. La integración de los aportes de ambas fases dio como resultado la construcción de una matriz conformada por tres dimensiones, seis competencias y 41 indicadores relativos al desempeño de la tutoría en las IES.
Las funciones docentes en las instituciones de educación superior se han diversificado para mejorar la terminalidad y prevenir el rezago académico. Si bien la tutoría ha sido hasta el momento la estrategia por excelencia, existen otras funciones docentes como la supervisión, la asesoría, la orientación educativa, el coaching educativo y, en especial, la mentoría, que ha sido poco empleada en el contexto educativo local. El propósito de este artículo es conceptualizar de manera teórica estas funciones docentes para diferenciarlas y mostrar cómo pueden complementarse. Se argumenta sobre el valor de la mentoría en la formación de los estudiantes y se concluye que es necesario incorporarla en las instituciones de educación superior, debido a su potencial para promover el logro académico.
