O presente estudo analisa os dados de registros de internações hospitalares de sujeitos com 60 anos e mais no Brasil e sua respectiva distribuição espacial nas cinco regiões do país. Trata-se de um estudo epidemiológico, que utiliza dados secundários e retrospectivos referentes às internações hospitalares registrados pelo Sistema Único de Saúde no ano de 2013. Os dados foram obtidos em pesquisa por regiões na base nacional do Sistema de Informações Hospitalares do Sistema Único de Saúde e do Ministério da Saúde. Foram construídos mapas temáticos, utilizando o programa estatístico do Sistema Único de Saúde, de acordo com as malhas cartográficas, buscando identificar a distribuição dos indicadores de acordo com o local de ocorrência da internação. Sabe-se que entre 70% e 80% do total das internações ocorridas a partir da consolidação do Sistema Único de Saúde são computadas por meio das autorizações de internações hospitalares. A maior taxa de internação foi por doenças cardiovasculares, equivalente a 24,5% do total de todas as internações, a qual foi seguida pela taxa de doenças respiratórias, de 15,4% e as do aparelho digestivo, com 10,2%. Analisando a distribuição de acordo com as regiões do Brasil, as maiores taxas ponderadas ocorreram na Região Sul. A análise dos dados comprova uma distribuição não homogênea de internações na população. O estudo pode fornecer subsídios técnicos para discussão e elaboração de estratégias específicas para a população idosa residente nessas localidades.
